What Is Add Line Numbers?

Add Line Numbers is a free online text formatting tool that automatically places sequential numbers at the beginning of each line of text. Instead of manually numbering lines one at a time, you can paste your content into the tool and generate a numbered version in seconds.

Line numbering can be useful when reviewing source code, discussing documents, referencing text, preparing technical material, checking lists or communicating about specific lines of content. The tool also lets you control the starting number, numbering increment, separator style, zero padding and treatment of blank lines.

Why Use Add Line Numbers?

Automatically numbering text makes individual lines easier to identify and reference while avoiding repetitive manual formatting. The tool provides several options so the resulting numbering can match the format you need.

1

Automatic Numbering

Add sequential line numbers to an entire block of text instantly.

2

Custom Starting Number

Start numbering from any whole number instead of always beginning with 1.

3

Custom Increment

Choose the amount added between successive line numbers for flexible numbering sequences.

4

Zero Padding

Use leading zeros to create consistently sized numbers such as 001, 002 and 003.

5

Blank-Line Control

Choose whether blank lines should receive numbers or remain without line numbers.

6

Copy or Download

Copy the finished result to your clipboard or save the numbered text as a plain text file.

How to Use Add Line Numbers

Adding line numbers takes only a few steps. The tool processes the text directly in your browser and immediately produces a numbered version.

  1. Enter your text — Paste or type the text you want to number into the input box.
  2. Choose your numbering options — Set the starting number, increment, separator style and number width if required.
  3. Configure blank lines — Choose whether blank lines should also receive line numbers and whether a final empty line should be preserved.
  4. Add the line numbers — Click “Add Line Numbers”, then copy or download the generated result.

Add Line Numbers to Text Online

Adding line numbers is useful whenever individual lines need to be referenced quickly. For example, developers can use numbered text when discussing source code, writers can use it when reviewing drafts, and technical teams can use line references when examining configuration files, logs or other structured text.

This line numbering tool keeps the original text on each line while adding a number before it. You can choose how the number is separated from the text, allowing the output to use a period, colon, space, tab or parentheses. The starting number and increment can also be changed when a particular numbering sequence is required.

Customise Line Number Formatting

The default numbering sequence starts at 1 and increases by 1 for every numbered line. You can change the starting number to create a different sequence, or change the increment to produce sequences such as 10, 20, 30 and 40. Zero padding can also be enabled when consistent number widths are useful, such as 001, 002 and 003.

Number Blank Lines or Leave Them Unnumbered

Blank lines can either be included in the numbering sequence or left without a number. This is particularly useful for formatted documents and source code where empty lines are used to separate sections. The tool also provides control over a final empty line so that the structure of the original text can be retained when required.

Add Line Numbers: Options and Limitations

The tool treats each line separated by a standard line break as an individual line. When blank-line numbering is enabled, blank lines receive the next number in the sequence. When it is disabled, blank lines remain unnumbered and do not advance the numbering sequence.

Zero padding affects the displayed number rather than the underlying sequence. For example, a starting number of 1 with a width of 3 produces 001, while the next numbers are 002, 003 and so on. The tool does not alter the actual words, punctuation or other content within your text.

All processing takes place locally in your browser. Your text is not uploaded to YesTools for numbering, making the tool suitable for ordinary text-formatting tasks where you want the processing to happen directly on your device.
