What Is an Algebra Calculator?

An algebra calculator is an online tool for working with algebraic expressions and equations. It can help simplify expressions, combine like terms, solve equations and evaluate expressions for a particular value of a variable.

This Algebra Calculator is designed for common polynomial calculations involving the variable x. It can solve linear and quadratic equations and simplify supported expressions without requiring mathematical software or an account.

Why Use the Algebra Calculator?

The calculator provides a quick way to check algebraic calculations and work through common expressions and equations directly in a web browser.

1

Solve Equations

Solve supported linear and quadratic equations involving x and display the resulting solution or solutions.

2

Simplify Expressions

Combine like terms and expand supported polynomial expressions into a simplified form.

3

Evaluate Expressions

Enter a value for x to calculate the numerical result of a supported algebraic expression.

4

Quadratic Equations

Calculate real solutions for equations containing x² using the quadratic formula.

5

Parentheses

Use parentheses to group terms and perform calculations involving expressions such as (x + 3)(x − 2).

6

Free Online Tool

Use the calculator directly in your browser without downloading software or creating an account.

How to Use the Algebra Calculator

Enter your expression or equation, select the required operation and calculate the result.

  1. Enter an expression or equation — Type an algebraic expression such as 2x + 5 or an equation such as 2x + 5 = 15.
  2. Choose an operation — Select Solve equation, Simplify expression or Evaluate expression.
  3. Enter x when required — When evaluating an expression, enter the numerical value you want to use for x.
  4. Calculate the result — Select Calculate to display the simplified expression, numerical result or equation solution.

How to Solve Algebra Equations

Algebraic equations contain one or more unknown values represented by variables. Solving an equation means finding the value of the variable that makes both sides of the equation equal. For example, the equation 2x + 5 = 15 has the solution x = 5.

Linear equations contain a variable raised to the first power, while quadratic equations contain a variable raised to the second power. The Algebra Calculator can solve both types when they can be represented as supported polynomial equations.

Solving Linear Equations

A linear equation can generally be written in the form ax + b = 0. The solution is obtained by rearranging the equation so that x is isolated. For example, 3x + 6 = 0 gives x = −2.

Solving Quadratic Equations

A quadratic equation can generally be written as ax² + bx + c = 0. When a is not zero, the quadratic formula can be used to determine its solutions. Depending on the discriminant, a quadratic equation can have two distinct real solutions, one repeated real solution or no real solutions.

Algebra Calculator Input and Limitations

The calculator supports polynomial expressions involving x, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division by numerical constants, parentheses and powers of x up to x². Implicit multiplication such as 2x and (x + 1)(x − 1) is supported.

For equation solving, enter an equation containing an equals sign, such as x + 4 = 10 or x² − 5x + 6 = 0. The calculator focuses on linear and quadratic equations and does not attempt to solve arbitrary higher-degree, trigonometric, logarithmic or transcendental equations.
