What Is an Annual Salary to Hourly Rate Calculator?
An annual salary to hourly rate calculator converts a yearly salary into an equivalent gross hourly rate. It uses your annual salary, average number of hours worked each week and number of working weeks per year to estimate how much your salary represents for each hour worked.
This can be useful when comparing job offers, evaluating changes in working hours, comparing full-time and part-time employment, assessing contract opportunities or simply understanding the hourly value of an annual salary. The calculation can also help when a job advert lists salary annually while another opportunity quotes an hourly rate.
Why Use an Annual Salary to Hourly Rate Calculator?
Annual salaries and hourly rates describe the same underlying pay in different ways. Converting between them makes it easier to compare different employment arrangements using a consistent hourly figure.

How to Calculate an Hourly Rate From an Annual Salary
The basic formula for converting an annual salary into an hourly rate is to divide the annual salary by the total number of hours worked in a year. Annual working hours are calculated by multiplying weekly working hours by the number of working weeks.
For example, if your annual salary is £35,000 and you work 37.5 hours per week for 52 weeks, your estimated annual working hours are 1,950. Dividing £35,000 by 1,950 gives an estimated gross hourly rate of approximately £17.95.
Annual Salary to Hourly Rate Formula
The formula is: Hourly Rate = Annual Salary ÷ (Weekly Working Hours × Working Weeks Per Year). This calculation produces a gross hourly rate and does not account for tax, National Insurance, pension contributions or other deductions.
Why Working Hours Matter
The same annual salary can produce different hourly rates depending on the number of hours worked. For example, an annual salary of £40,000 produces a higher hourly equivalent at 35 hours per week than it does at 40 hours per week. This is why comparing annual salaries without considering working hours can give an incomplete picture of the value of different jobs.
Annual Salary to Hourly Rate Calculator Assumptions
The calculator assumes that your annual salary represents gross employment income and that your stated weekly hours and working weeks accurately represent the period over which that salary is earned. The default of 37.5 hours per week and 52 weeks per year is provided as a common example rather than a universal working pattern.
Annual leave can affect how you interpret an hourly salary calculation. If you receive a fixed annual salary and paid holiday, using 52 weeks provides an annualised hourly equivalent. If you instead want to estimate the rate for actual hours worked and need to exclude unpaid periods, you can reduce the number of working weeks in the calculator.
The result is a gross hourly rate. It does not calculate take-home pay and does not deduct UK Income Tax, National Insurance, pension contributions, student loan repayments, benefits, bonuses, overtime or other payroll adjustments.
