What Is an APR Calculator?

An APR calculator estimates the annual percentage rate associated with borrowing. APR is designed to provide a broader indication of the cost of credit than the stated interest rate alone by taking certain fees and charges into account.

This calculator uses the loan amount, annual interest rate, repayment term and upfront fees to produce an illustrative annualised borrowing cost. It can be useful when comparing different loan scenarios where the headline interest rates do not tell the whole story.

Why Use APR Calculator?

Comparing borrowing costs can be difficult when loans have different interest rates, terms or fees. An APR calculation provides another way to assess the overall cost of a loan.

1

Estimate APR

Calculate an illustrative annual percentage rate from your loan details.

2

Compare Interest Rates

See the difference between a stated interest rate and the estimated APR.

3

Include Upfront Fees

Account for an upfront fee when estimating the effective borrowing cost.

4

Monthly Payment

Calculate the estimated regular monthly repayment alongside the APR.

5

Total Interest

See the estimated interest payable throughout the repayment term.

6

Instant Results

Calculate your estimated borrowing cost directly in your browser without submitting financial information.

How to Use the APR Calculator

Enter the main details of the loan you want to assess, then calculate the estimated APR and overall borrowing cost.

  1. Enter the loan amount — Enter the amount you intend to borrow in pounds.
  2. Enter the interest rate — Enter the annual interest rate charged on the loan.
  3. Enter the repayment term — Enter the number of years over which the loan will be repaid.
  4. Enter any upfront fees — Add applicable upfront borrowing fees, or leave the value at £0 if there are none, then select Calculate APR.

APR Calculator for Loans

APR, or annual percentage rate, is intended to make the cost of borrowing easier to compare by expressing borrowing costs as an annualised rate. A loan can have a relatively low advertised interest rate but a higher overall cost when fees and other applicable charges are taken into account.

An APR calculation is particularly useful when comparing loans with different fee structures. Looking only at the nominal interest rate may not provide a complete picture if one lender charges a substantial arrangement fee while another charges little or no upfront fee.

APR vs Interest Rate

The interest rate describes the interest charged on the outstanding balance according to the loan agreement. APR is a broader annualised measure that can incorporate certain additional costs associated with obtaining the credit. As a result, the APR may be higher than the advertised interest rate when applicable fees are included.

How APR Is Estimated

This calculator first determines the regular monthly repayment using the stated interest rate and repayment term. It then estimates the annualised rate that would produce the same stream of payments when the upfront fee is treated as reducing the amount of money actually received by the borrower. This provides an illustrative effective borrowing rate.

Understanding Your APR Results

If the loan has no additional fees, the estimated APR will generally be close to the stated interest rate, although the exact relationship can depend on how the rate is annualised and how payments are structured. Adding an upfront fee normally increases the effective cost of borrowing and therefore increases the estimated APR.

For example, a £25,000 loan with a 6% annual interest rate over five years and no upfront fee produces an estimated APR close to the stated rate. Adding a fee changes the effective amount received while the repayment schedule remains based on the original loan terms, increasing the annualised borrowing cost.

This calculator does not automatically include arrangement fees, broker fees, insurance, taxes, late-payment charges, variable interest rates or other costs unless they are represented by the inputs provided. Actual lender APR figures may therefore differ.

The result is intended for general information and comparison purposes and should not be treated as a personalised financial recommendation. For an official APR, refer to the lender's regulated product information and credit agreement.

Frequently Asked Questions

APR, or annual percentage rate, is a measure intended to represent the annualised cost of borrowing. Unlike a basic interest rate, APR can take certain fees and charges associated with borrowing into account.
The interest rate represents the interest charged on the amount borrowed, while APR is intended to provide a broader measure of the annualised borrowing cost by taking applicable fees and charges into account.
APR can be higher than the stated interest rate when applicable upfront fees or other borrowing costs are included in the calculation. These additional costs increase the effective cost of borrowing.
An APR calculation generally requires the amount borrowed, interest rate, repayment schedule and relevant fees or charges. This calculator uses the loan amount, annual interest rate, repayment term and upfront fees.
Changing the repayment term changes the timing and amount of payments and can therefore affect an annualised borrowing-cost calculation, particularly when fees are included.
The result is an estimate based on the assumptions and inputs used by this calculator. Official APR figures can differ because regulated APR calculations may include additional fees, charges, taxes, payment timings or other costs.
