What Is an Average Calculator?
An average calculator finds the arithmetic mean of a group of numbers. It does this by adding all of the values together and dividing the total by the number of values in the set.
This can be useful when analysing test scores, measurements, prices, temperatures, statistics and other numerical data. Instead of calculating the mean manually, you can enter your values and get the result instantly.
Why Use Average Calculator?
This free average calculator provides a quick way to calculate the arithmetic mean while also showing the total and number of values used in the calculation.
Instant Average
Calculate the arithmetic mean of your numbers immediately.
Multiple Values
Enter a set of numbers at once instead of calculating each value manually.
Decimal Support
Use decimal numbers for measurements, scores and other precise data.
Negative Values
Include negative numbers in your calculations where required.
Shows the Total
See the sum of all entered values alongside the average.
Browser-Based
Calculations are performed directly in your browser without sending your values to a server.
How to Use Average Calculator
Use the calculator to find the arithmetic mean of any set of valid numerical values.
- Enter your numbers — Type or paste your values into the input box.
- Separate the values — Use commas, spaces or separate lines between numbers.
- Calculate the average — Click Calculate Average to process the values.
- Review the result — View the average, total and number of values used.
How to Calculate an Average
The arithmetic average, also known as the mean, is calculated by adding every number in a set and dividing the resulting total by the number of values. The basic formula is Average = Sum of Values ÷ Number of Values.
For example, if a set contains 10, 20, 30 and 40, the total is 100 and there are four values. The average is therefore 100 ÷ 4, which equals 25.
Average, Mean and Arithmetic Mean
In everyday mathematical use, the terms average and mean are often used to describe the arithmetic mean. The arithmetic mean gives each value equal weight and provides a single number representing the central value of a numerical data set.
Using an Average in Everyday Calculations
Averages can be useful for comparing typical results across a collection of values. Common examples include finding an average test score, average temperature, average price, average measurement or average performance over a period of time.
Average Calculation Information
The calculator accepts valid whole numbers, decimal numbers and negative numbers. Values can be separated by commas, spaces or line breaks. At least one numerical value is required.
The displayed result is rounded to a practical number of significant digits to reduce common floating-point display artefacts. All calculations are performed locally in your browser.
