What Is a Battery Capacity Calculator?

A Battery Capacity Calculator determines how much electrical energy a battery can theoretically store by using its nominal voltage and capacity in amp-hours. The result can be expressed in watt-hours (Wh) or kilowatt-hours (kWh), making it easier to compare battery energy with the power requirements of electrical devices and systems.

This calculator also estimates usable battery energy, current draw and runtime when a power load, system efficiency and depth-of-discharge limit are provided. It can be useful when planning battery-powered equipment, backup power systems, portable electronics, off-grid applications, energy storage projects and other electrical systems.

Why Use a Battery Capacity Calculator?

A battery's amp-hour rating alone does not show the complete amount of energy available to a load. Combining voltage, capacity, efficiency and discharge assumptions provides a more useful estimate of the battery's practical energy and operating time.

How to Use the Battery Capacity Calculator

Enter the battery specifications and load information, then calculate the estimated energy and runtime using the following steps.

  1. Enter the battery voltage — Enter the nominal voltage of the battery, such as 12 V, 24 V or 48 V.
  2. Enter the battery capacity — Enter the rated capacity in amp-hours (Ah) shown by the battery manufacturer.
  3. Enter the load and assumptions — Enter the electrical load in watts, together with estimated system efficiency and the intended depth of discharge.
  4. Calculate the results — Select Calculate Battery Capacity to see nominal energy, usable energy, current draw and estimated runtime.

How to Calculate Battery Capacity in Watt-Hours

The basic battery energy calculation is straightforward: multiply the nominal battery voltage by the battery capacity in amp-hours. The formula is Wh = V × Ah. For example, a 12 V battery rated at 100 Ah has a nominal energy capacity of 1,200 Wh, or 1.2 kWh.

Nominal energy is not necessarily the same as energy that can be delivered to a device. Depth of discharge and system efficiency can reduce the amount of energy available to the load. This calculator therefore applies both factors when estimating usable energy and runtime.

Understanding Battery Capacity in Ah and Wh

Amp-hours (Ah) measure electrical charge capacity, while watt-hours (Wh) measure energy. Because watt-hours incorporate voltage, they are particularly useful for comparing batteries that operate at different voltages. Two batteries with the same Ah rating can contain different amounts of energy if their voltages differ.

Estimating Battery Runtime

Estimated runtime is calculated by dividing the usable battery energy by the electrical load in watts. For example, if a battery provides an estimated 972 Wh of usable energy and a device consumes 100 W, the theoretical runtime is 9.72 hours. Real-world runtime can be shorter or otherwise different because battery capacity is affected by operating conditions and discharge characteristics.

Understanding Battery Capacity Calculator Results

The nominal battery energy result represents the theoretical energy calculated from the battery's stated voltage and amp-hour rating. The usable energy result applies the entered depth-of-discharge and efficiency percentages, providing a more conservative estimate of energy available to the load.

The current calculation uses the specified power load divided by battery voltage. Actual battery current can vary during operation, particularly when an inverter, DC-DC converter or other power electronics are used. Battery chemistry, temperature, age, discharge rate, voltage variation and manufacturer specifications can also affect real-world capacity and runtime. The calculator is therefore intended for estimation and planning rather than a substitute for manufacturer data or detailed electrical system design.

Frequently Asked Questions

A Battery Capacity Calculator calculates the energy stored in a battery from its voltage and capacity in amp-hours, and can also estimate usable energy, runtime and current draw for a specified electrical load.
Battery energy in watt-hours is calculated by multiplying nominal battery voltage by battery capacity in amp-hours. The basic formula is Wh = V × Ah.
Amp-hours (Ah) describe electrical charge capacity, while watt-hours (Wh) describe energy capacity. Watt-hours account for both battery capacity and voltage, so Wh is generally more useful when comparing energy stored by batteries with different voltages.
Battery or system efficiency reduces the amount of stored energy that can be delivered to the load. A lower efficiency percentage therefore produces a shorter estimated runtime than the nominal battery capacity alone would suggest.
Depth of discharge, or DoD, is the percentage of a battery's nominal capacity that is considered available for use. For example, a 90% DoD means the calculation treats 90% of the nominal battery energy as available before the specified discharge limit is reached.
The results are mathematical estimates based on the values entered. Actual battery performance can vary because of temperature, battery age, discharge rate, chemistry, inverter losses, wiring losses, manufacturer specifications and other operating conditions.
