Important

This calculator provides an estimate for a straightforward wall using the block dimensions and mortar joint entered. Actual quantities can vary because of block size tolerances, wall openings, corners, piers, bond patterns, cuts, breakages and construction methods.

For a construction project, verify the final quantity against the actual block manufacturer's dimensions and your project's drawings or specifications before ordering materials.

What Is a Block Calculator?

A block calculator is an online tool that estimates how many concrete blocks or masonry blocks are required to construct a wall. It uses the dimensions of the wall and the face dimensions of the blocks to calculate an approximate quantity.

This type of calculator is useful when planning block walls for extensions, garages, garden walls, retaining structures, outbuildings and other construction projects. By including the mortar joint, wall openings and a waste allowance, the estimate can be made more useful for material planning and purchasing.

Why Use a Block Calculator?

Working out block quantities manually can involve several measurements and conversions. This calculator performs the core calculation automatically and provides a clear estimate based on the information you enter.

1

Wall Area

Calculate the wall's total surface area from its length and height.

2

Block Dimensions

Enter the actual length and height of the blocks you plan to use.

3

Mortar Joints

Include the mortar joint when determining the effective coverage of each block.

4

Opening Deductions

Deduct the combined area of doors, windows and other openings from the wall.

5

Waste Allowance

Add an allowance for breakages, cuts, damage and other material losses.

6

Instant Results

Receive the estimated block quantity immediately without manual calculations.

How to Use the Block Calculator

Enter the dimensions of the wall and blocks, then provide the mortar joint, opening area and waste allowance. The calculator will determine the approximate number of blocks required.

  1. Enter the wall dimensions — Enter the wall length and height and select the appropriate measurement unit.
  2. Enter the block dimensions — Enter the length and height of one block and select its measurement unit.
  3. Enter the project details — Specify the mortar joint and, if applicable, the combined area of doors, windows and other wall openings.
  4. Choose the waste allowance — Select an appropriate allowance and click Calculate Blocks to see the estimated quantity.

Calculate How Many Blocks You Need

The number of blocks required depends primarily on the net wall area and the effective face area covered by each block. To calculate the net wall area, multiply the wall length by its height and subtract the combined area of any doors, windows or other openings.

The calculator then adds the mortar joint to the block's length and height to estimate the area covered by each block within the finished wall. Dividing the net wall area by this effective coverage produces the basic block requirement. The selected waste allowance is then applied to produce the recommended quantity to purchase.

Block Calculation Formula

The basic wall area formula is wall area = wall length × wall height. The net area is then wall area − opening area. Effective block coverage is calculated using (block length + mortar joint) × (block height + mortar joint). Finally, the net wall area is divided by the effective block coverage.

Example Block Calculation

For example, consider a wall measuring 10 metres long and 2.4 metres high. Its gross area is 24 square metres. If doors and windows account for 2 square metres, the net wall area is 22 square metres. Using blocks measuring 440 mm by 215 mm with a 10 mm mortar joint gives an effective coverage of 0.2025 square metres per block, producing approximately 109 blocks before waste. With a 10% allowance, the estimated purchase quantity is approximately 120 blocks.

Block Calculator Results and Accuracy

The result from this block calculator is an estimate and should not be treated as an exact material order. The calculation assumes a straightforward rectangular wall and uses the block face dimensions and mortar joint entered by the user. Complex wall layouts may require additional blocks because of corners, piers, returns, changes in level and cutting requirements.

Doors, windows and other openings can significantly affect the final quantity, which is why the calculator provides an opening-area deduction. For greater accuracy, use the manufacturer's actual block dimensions and a realistic mortar joint for the construction method being used. A waste allowance can then provide additional material for unavoidable cuts, breakages and losses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Calculate the wall area by multiplying its length by its height, then subtract the area of any doors, windows or other openings. Divide the remaining wall area by the effective face area of one block, including the mortar joint, and round the result up. A waste allowance can then be added.
You need the wall length and height, plus the length and height of the block you intend to use. You can also enter the mortar joint, openings and waste allowance to make the estimate more representative of the project.
Yes. The calculator adds the specified mortar joint to the block length and height when estimating the effective area covered by each block.
Yes. The calculator allows you to enter the total area of openings such as doors and windows. That area is deducted from the wall area before the block quantity is calculated.
A waste allowance can account for breakages, cuts, damage and installation losses. The appropriate percentage depends on the project, block type and construction method, so the calculator lets you select an allowance rather than assuming one fixed percentage.
No. It provides an estimate based on the measurements and assumptions entered. Actual requirements can vary because of block dimensions, mortar joints, wall openings, bond patterns, cuts, breakages and construction methods. Confirm the final quantity with your builder or supplier before ordering.
