What Is a Brick Calculator?

A brick calculator is an online tool used to estimate how many bricks are required to build a wall. It uses the dimensions of the wall together with the dimensions of the bricks and the mortar joint to determine the approximate number of bricks needed.

A brick quantity calculator can be useful when planning garden walls, house walls, extensions, boundary walls, landscaping projects and other masonry work. It provides a quick starting estimate before purchasing materials, helping you understand the approximate quantity required for a particular wall size.

Why Use a Brick Calculator?

Calculating brick quantities manually can be time-consuming, particularly when measurements use different units or when a waste allowance needs to be included. This calculator performs the calculation instantly from the measurements you provide.

1

Wall Area

Calculate the total face area of a wall from its length and height.

2

Brick Dimensions

Enter the length and height of the bricks you intend to use.

3

Mortar Joints

Include the mortar joint when calculating the effective coverage of each brick.

4

Multiple Units

Use metres, centimetres, feet or inches for wall measurements and several units for brick dimensions.

5

Waste Allowance

Add an allowance for cuts, breakages and other losses during construction.

6

Instant Results

Get an estimated brick quantity immediately without performing the calculation manually.

How to Use the Brick Calculator

Enter the dimensions of your wall and bricks, specify the mortar joint and choose an appropriate waste allowance. The calculator will then estimate the number of bricks required.

  1. Enter the wall dimensions — Enter the length and height of the wall and select the appropriate measurement unit.
  2. Enter the brick dimensions — Enter the length and height of one brick and select its measurement unit.
  3. Enter the mortar joint — Specify the approximate mortar joint between bricks.
  4. Choose the waste allowance — Select an allowance for cuts, breakages and installation losses, then select Calculate Bricks.

Calculate How Many Bricks You Need

To estimate the number of bricks required for a wall, first calculate the wall's surface area by multiplying its length by its height. The effective coverage of each brick is then estimated by including the mortar joint around the brick. Dividing the wall area by the effective coverage gives an approximate number of bricks.

For example, a wall measuring 10 metres long by 2 metres high has a face area of 20 square metres. If the selected brick and mortar joint provide an effective coverage of approximately 0.015 square metres per brick, the basic requirement would be about 1,334 bricks before an allowance for waste is included. The exact result depends on the brick dimensions and mortar joint entered into the calculator.

Brick Calculation Formula

The basic wall area formula is wall area = wall length × wall height. The calculator then estimates the effective brick coverage using the brick face dimensions plus the mortar joint. The estimated brick quantity is the wall area divided by that effective coverage.

Choosing a Waste Allowance

Bricks may be broken, cut or damaged during transport and construction, and additional material may be needed depending on the wall design. Adding a waste allowance helps provide a more practical purchasing estimate. The appropriate allowance depends on the project, so it is best to consider the wall design, brick type and construction method before deciding how much extra material to order.

Brick Calculator Results and Accuracy

The result produced by this brick calculator is an estimate rather than an exact order quantity. It assumes that the wall is represented by a simple rectangular area and does not automatically deduct doors, windows, corners, piers or other features that may change the actual number of bricks required.

Brick sizes can vary between manufacturers and products, while mortar joint dimensions and laying patterns can also affect material requirements. For a real construction project, use the actual dimensions of the bricks being purchased and confirm the final quantity with your builder, bricklayer or material supplier. The calculator is intended to assist with planning and estimating rather than replace professional measurements or supplier specifications.

Frequently Asked Questions

Calculate the wall area by multiplying its length by its height, then account for the area covered by one brick including its mortar joint. Divide the wall area by the effective brick coverage and round the result up. A waste allowance can then be added for cuts, breakages and installation losses.
You need the wall length and height, plus the length and height of the brick you intend to use. The calculator also allows you to specify the mortar joint and a waste allowance.
Yes. The calculator uses the brick face dimensions together with the mortar joint to estimate the effective horizontal and vertical coverage of each brick.
A waste allowance can account for breakages, cuts, damage and installation losses. The appropriate percentage depends on the project, brick type and workmanship, so the calculator lets you choose an allowance rather than assuming one fixed value.
Yes. Enter the actual length and height of the wall and the dimensions of the bricks you plan to use. The calculator will recalculate the estimated quantity for each set of measurements.
No. It provides an estimate based on the dimensions and assumptions entered. Actual requirements can vary because of brick size tolerances, mortar joints, openings, cuts, patterns, breakages and installation methods. Confirm quantities with your supplier or builder before ordering.
