What Is a Calorie Surplus Calculator?

A calorie surplus calculator estimates how many calories you may need to consume each day to eat above your estimated maintenance calorie level. A sustained calorie surplus can lead to an increase in body weight.

The YesTools Calorie Surplus Calculator uses your age, sex, height, weight and activity level to estimate your basal metabolic rate and total daily energy expenditure. It then adds your selected percentage surplus to produce an estimated daily calorie target.

Why Use the Calorie Surplus Calculator?

This calculator provides a simple way to estimate the relationship between your maintenance calorie level and a higher daily calorie intake for weight-gain planning.

1

Estimate Maintenance Calories

Estimate your daily energy requirements using your BMR and selected activity level.

2

Calculate a Calorie Surplus

Calculate the additional calories represented by your selected surplus percentage.

3

Get a Daily Calorie Target

See your estimated maintenance calories plus the selected surplus as a daily calorie target.

4

Choose Your Activity Level

Select from five activity categories to account for differences in typical daily physical activity.

5

See Weekly Estimates

Review the calculated weekly calorie surplus and a theoretical weight-gain estimate.

6

Free and Private

The calculation runs directly in your browser without requiring an account or sending your measurements to a server.

How to Use the Calorie Surplus Calculator

Enter your personal information, choose your activity level and select the percentage of additional calories you want to calculate.

  1. Enter your sex, age, weight and height — Provide the information requested by the calculator.
  2. Select your activity level — Choose the category that best describes your usual physical activity.
  3. Choose a calorie surplus — Select a percentage between 5% and 25% above your estimated maintenance calories.
  4. Calculate your results — The calculator displays your estimated BMR, maintenance calories, surplus and daily calorie target.

How to Calculate a Calorie Surplus for Weight Gain

A calorie surplus is calculated by taking your estimated maintenance calorie intake and adding additional calories. For example, if your estimated maintenance level is 2,500 calories per day and you select a 10% surplus, the additional amount is 250 calories. Your resulting target would therefore be approximately 2,750 calories per day.

The basic formula used by this calculator is: calorie surplus = maintenance calories × surplus percentage ÷ 100. The daily calorie target is then calculated by adding the surplus to the estimated maintenance calories.

Understanding Maintenance Calories

Maintenance calories represent an estimate of the energy your body uses each day at your stated activity level. The calculator first estimates basal metabolic rate using the Mifflin-St Jeor equation and then applies an activity multiplier to estimate total daily energy expenditure, commonly called TDEE.

Calorie Surplus and Weight Gain

A calorie surplus can result in weight gain when maintained over time. However, the amount and composition of weight gained cannot be predicted precisely from calorie intake alone. Changes in body weight can include fat mass, lean tissue, water and glycogen, and individual results vary considerably.

Calorie Surplus Calculator Accuracy and Limitations

The results from this calculator are estimates and are not a direct measurement of your actual energy expenditure. Equations such as the Mifflin-St Jeor equation are useful for estimating energy requirements, but individual calorie needs can differ because of metabolism, body composition, activity, occupation and other factors.

The theoretical weight-gain estimates shown by the calculator use approximately 7,700 calories per kilogram as a simple mathematical energy equivalent. This should not be interpreted as a prediction of exactly how much body weight you will gain because changes in body composition and energy expenditure make real-world weight change more complex.

Frequently Asked Questions

A calorie surplus occurs when you consume more calories than your body uses over time. A sustained surplus can contribute to an increase in body weight.
The calculator estimates your basal metabolic rate using the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, applies an activity multiplier to estimate maintenance calories, and then adds your selected calorie surplus.
There is no single calorie surplus that is appropriate for everyone. This calculator allows you to select a surplus percentage and calculates an estimated daily calorie target from your estimated maintenance level.
Maintenance calories are an estimate of the energy your body uses each day at your stated activity level. Consuming approximately this amount may maintain body weight over time, although actual requirements vary.
A calorie surplus calculator provides an estimate rather than a direct measurement of energy expenditure. Actual calorie requirements vary between individuals because of factors such as metabolism, body composition and physical activity.
A calorie surplus can provide additional energy during a muscle-building programme, but muscle gain also depends on resistance training, protein intake, recovery and individual factors. A calorie surplus does not guarantee that all weight gained will be muscle.
