Construction & Home Calculators

Carpet Calculator

Calculate how much carpet you need for one or more rooms, including an adjustable allowance for cutting and installation waste.

Bluehost

Carpet Calculator

Enter your room dimensions, number of rooms and waste allowance to estimate the carpet and underlay required.

Room Dimensions

Enter the dimensions of a rectangular room. If several rooms have the same dimensions, enter their quantity instead of calculating each room separately.

Use 1 for a single room.

Carpet Requirements

Set the additional material allowance you want to include for trimming, cutting, seams, fitting and other installation waste.

10% is a useful starting point for a straightforward rectangular room.
Optional. Enter the manufacturer's roll width to compare the room width with the available carpet width.

Underlay

Underlay is normally installed beneath carpet. Use a separate waste allowance if your underlay requires different cutting or fitting margins.

A smaller allowance may be suitable for simple rooms with straightforward cuts.

  • Carpet roll width can affect how the carpet should be oriented, joined and cut.
  • This check does not replace a professional carpet fitting plan.

This calculator estimates material quantities for rectangular rooms. Carpet is commonly supplied in fixed roll widths, so the area calculation alone does not determine the exact amount of carpet a fitter should order. Always confirm the final quantity and cutting plan with the carpet retailer or installer.

What Is a Carpet Calculator?

A carpet calculator is an online tool that estimates the amount of flooring material needed to cover a room or several rooms. It uses the length and width of the floor to calculate the area, then adds an allowance for cutting, trimming and installation waste.

This makes a carpet calculator useful when planning a new flooring project and estimating how much carpet and underlay you may need to purchase. It can be used for bedrooms, living rooms, offices, hallways and other rectangular spaces.

Why Use a Carpet Calculator?

Knowing the approximate floor area before ordering carpet helps you compare products, estimate material requirements and reduce the risk of ordering significantly too little or too much. A waste allowance can also be included to account for the practical realities of cutting and fitting carpet.

1

Accurate Floor Area

Calculate the floor area of a rectangular room from its length and width.

2

Multiple Rooms

Calculate the combined requirement for multiple rooms with the same dimensions.

3

Waste Allowance

Add an adjustable percentage for trimming, cutting, seams and installation waste.

4

Metric & Imperial

Calculate carpet requirements using either metres or feet to suit your measurements.

5

Underlay Estimate

Calculate a separate underlay quantity with its own adjustable waste allowance.

6

Carpet Width Check

Optionally compare the carpet roll width with the room width to highlight potential fitting considerations.

How to Use the Carpet Calculator

Enter the dimensions of the room and the allowances you want to use, then calculate the estimated carpet and underlay requirements.

  1. Select your measurement unit — Choose metres or feet and make sure all dimensions are entered using the same unit.
  2. Enter the room dimensions — Enter the room length, width and number of rooms being covered.
  3. Set the waste allowances — Choose an appropriate carpet waste percentage and, if required, an underlay waste percentage.
  4. Calculate the requirement — Select Calculate Carpet to see the floor area, carpet quantity, waste allowance and underlay requirement.

How Much Carpet Do I Need?

For a simple rectangular room, the basic carpet area calculation is straightforward: multiply the room length by the room width. For example, a room measuring 5 metres by 4 metres has a floor area of 20 square metres. If the room is the only space being carpeted, 20 m² is the basic floor area before allowing for cutting and installation waste.

Carpet is not normally purchased based solely on the mathematical floor area. It is supplied in particular widths, and the carpet must be positioned and cut to fit the room. Doorways, awkward corners, alcoves, seams, pattern direction and the position of joins can all affect how much material is actually needed. For that reason, the calculator adds a configurable waste allowance to the basic floor area.

How to Calculate Carpet Area

The basic formula for a rectangular room is length × width = floor area. If several rooms have identical dimensions, multiply the area of one room by the number of rooms. For example, three rooms measuring 4 metres by 3 metres each have a combined floor area of 36 m².

Why Carpet Waste Matters

Some carpet is normally lost during installation because it has to be cut to the shape of the room and trimmed around walls, doorways and other features. If multiple pieces are required, joins can also affect the cutting plan. A waste allowance does not mean that this exact percentage will always be used; it is an estimate intended to provide additional material beyond the theoretical floor area.

Carpet Measurement Tips

Measure the actual floor area rather than relying on approximate room dimensions. For irregular rooms, divide the floor into smaller rectangles, calculate each section separately and add the results together. This generally produces a better area estimate than treating an irregular room as one large rectangle.

Carpet roll width is particularly important when ordering flooring. A room may have a calculated area that appears to require a certain number of square metres, while the available carpet width and the direction of the pile may require additional material or a different cutting arrangement. A professional carpet fitter or retailer can determine the most efficient layout and final order quantity.

Underlay should also be measured separately because it may have different roll dimensions and cutting requirements. The calculator provides a separate underlay estimate so that the carpet and underlay quantities can be considered independently.

Frequently Asked Questions

The calculator multiplies the room length by the room width to calculate the floor area, multiplies that result by the number of rooms, and then applies the carpet waste allowance you specify. It can also calculate a separate underlay requirement.
For a rectangular room, multiply the length by the width to find the floor area. You should then allow additional material for cutting and fitting. Entering a waste allowance in this calculator adds that percentage to the calculated floor area.
The appropriate allowance depends on the room shape, carpet width, pattern, seams and installation method. For a straightforward rectangular room, 10% is a useful general starting point, but a professional fitter may recommend a different amount.
Yes. Select Feet as the measurement unit and enter the room dimensions in feet. The results will then be displayed in square feet.
Yes. Underlay calculation can be enabled or disabled. When enabled, the calculator applies the separate underlay waste allowance you enter and displays the resulting underlay area independently from the carpet requirement.
No. It is an estimate intended for planning purposes. The final carpet requirement can be affected by fixed roll widths, room shape, seams, pattern direction, doorways, alcoves and the installer's cutting plan. Confirm the final quantity with your carpet supplier or fitter.
