What Is a Circle Area Calculator?
A circle area calculator is an online tool that calculates the amount of two-dimensional space enclosed by a circle. The calculation uses the radius of the circle and the mathematical constant pi (π).
This calculator can be used by students, teachers, engineers, designers, tradespeople and anyone who needs to determine the area of a circular shape. You can enter either the radius or diameter and choose from several common measurement units.
Why Use the Circle Area Calculator?
The calculator performs the circle area calculation automatically, reducing the need to work through the formula manually. It also shows the calculation so you can verify how the result was obtained.
Radius or Diameter
Calculate the area using either the radius or the diameter of the circle.
Multiple Units

How to Use the Circle Area Calculator
Use the calculator to determine the area of a circular shape in just a few steps.
- Enter the measurement — Enter the known radius or diameter of the circle.
- Select the measurement type — Choose whether the value you entered represents the radius or diameter.
- Select the unit — Choose the unit that corresponds to your measurement.
- Calculate the area — Click Calculate Area to display the circle's area and the calculation used.
Circle Area Formula
The standard formula for calculating the area of a circle is A = πr². In this formula, A represents the area, π represents pi, and r represents the radius of the circle. The radius is multiplied by itself before being multiplied by pi.
If the diameter is known instead of the radius, divide the diameter by two to obtain the radius. For example, a circle with a diameter of 10 cm has a radius of 5 cm. Its area is therefore π × 5², which is approximately 78.54 cm².
Calculating Area from Radius
When the radius is known, square the radius and multiply the result by π. For a radius of 4 metres, the calculation is π × 4², giving an area of approximately 50.2655 m².
Calculating Area from Diameter
When the diameter is known, first divide it by two to find the radius. The area can then be calculated using A = πr². This produces the same result as using the equivalent diameter formula A = πd² ÷ 4.
Circle Area Calculation Examples
The examples below demonstrate how different radius measurements affect the area of a circle. The resulting area is expressed in square units because area measures two dimensions.
| Radius | Calculation | Area |
|---|---|---|
| 1 cm | π × 1² | 3.14159 cm² |
| 5 cm | π × 5² | 78.53982 cm² |
| 10 cm | π × 10² | 314.15927 cm² |
The calculator uses the full precision of JavaScript's mathematical value of pi during the calculation and rounds the displayed result to a practical number of decimal places. Because the result represents area, the unit is squared, such as cm², m², ft² or in².
For measurements such as metres and centimetres, the result remains in the corresponding square unit. The same principle applies to imperial measurements such as inches, feet and yards.
