What Is a Credit Card Repayment Calculator?

A Credit Card Repayment Calculator is a free online tool that estimates how long it could take to pay off a credit card balance and how much interest may be paid during the repayment period. It uses your current balance, annual percentage rate (APR) and planned monthly payment to produce an estimated repayment schedule.

The calculator can help you understand the potential cost of carrying a credit card balance and compare different monthly payment amounts. It is useful when planning a debt repayment strategy or determining whether increasing your regular payment could shorten the repayment period.

Why Use a Credit Card Repayment Calculator?

Credit card interest can make a balance take considerably longer to repay when only relatively small monthly payments are made. Estimating the repayment period can make the relationship between your payment amount, interest and outstanding balance easier to understand.

How Credit Card Repayments Are Calculated

The calculator estimates credit card repayment using the outstanding balance, APR and fixed monthly payment. The APR is converted into an estimated monthly interest rate, which is applied to the remaining balance during each repayment period. The monthly payment is then used to reduce the balance after the estimated interest has been added.

As the balance decreases, the estimated interest charged each month also decreases. The process continues until the balance reaches zero. The final payment may be smaller than the regular monthly payment if only a small balance remains.

Credit Card APR and Interest

The annual percentage rate, or APR, represents the annualised interest rate associated with the credit card. A higher APR generally results in more interest accumulating while a balance remains outstanding. Enter the APR shown in your card agreement or account information for the most relevant estimate.

Why Monthly Payments Matter

The amount paid each month affects both the repayment period and the total interest cost. A larger payment generally reduces the outstanding balance more quickly, which can reduce the amount of time during which interest accumulates. A smaller payment can result in a longer repayment period and greater total interest.

Credit Card Repayment Calculator Limitations

The calculator provides an estimate rather than an exact statement of what a credit card issuer will charge. Actual credit card interest may be calculated using daily periodic rates or other methods specified by the card issuer. Fees, new purchases, cash advances, promotional rates, balance transfers, payment timing and changes to the interest rate can also affect the actual repayment cost.
