What Is a CSS Background Generator?
A CSS Background Generator is an online tool that helps create background styles using standard CSS. It can produce simple solid-colour backgrounds as well as linear and radial gradients, allowing you to experiment with colours and gradient settings without manually writing the CSS syntax.
The generator provides a live visual preview while you adjust the available options. Once the background looks right, you can copy the generated CSS and use it in a stylesheet, HTML document, component or other web project.
Why Use the CSS Background Generator?
CSS backgrounds can involve several properties and values, particularly when creating gradients. This tool provides a straightforward way to test different combinations and produce usable CSS without repeatedly writing and editing declarations manually.
Solid Backgrounds
Create simple background colours using a standard CSS background-colour declaration.
Linear Gradients
Generate smooth colour transitions along a configurable direction and angle.
Radial Gradients
Create circular or elliptical gradients that transition outward from a central point.
Custom Colours
Choose your own hexadecimal colours using the colour pickers or enter HEX values directly.
Live Preview
See changes immediately as you modify the background type, colours and gradient settings.
Ready-to-Copy CSS
Copy the generated CSS directly into your website or development project.
How to Use the CSS Background Generator
Choose the type of background you want and adjust the available settings until the live preview matches your requirements.
- Choose a background type — Select a solid colour, linear gradient or radial gradient.
- Choose your colours — Select colours with the colour pickers or enter hexadecimal colour values.
- Adjust the settings — For gradients, modify the angle, colour positions or radial shape as required.
- Copy the CSS — Select Copy CSS to copy the generated background declaration to your clipboard.
Create CSS Backgrounds and Gradients
CSS backgrounds are commonly used to add colour and visual depth to websites without requiring background image files. The background and background-color properties can create simple backgrounds, while CSS gradient functions can produce smooth transitions between multiple colours.
A linear gradient changes colour along a straight line. Its direction can be controlled with an angle, making it possible to create horizontal, vertical or diagonal effects. The position of each colour can also be adjusted to control how quickly the transition occurs.
Linear CSS Gradients
The linear-gradient() CSS function creates a gradual transition between colours along a straight line. A declaration such as background: linear-gradient(135deg, #0067f0, #008dfc); produces a diagonal gradient between two colours. The angle and colour stops can be changed to create different visual effects.
Radial CSS Gradients
The radial-gradient() function creates a gradient that radiates from a central point. CSS supports both circular and elliptical radial gradients. These backgrounds can be useful for highlights, decorative sections, hero areas and interface elements where a central colour transition is desirable.
Using Generated CSS Backgrounds
The generated output is standard CSS and can be applied to an HTML element, class, component or other selector. For example, the generated declaration can be placed inside an existing CSS rule such as .hero { background: linear-gradient(...); }.
The tool generates two-colour backgrounds for its gradient options. More complex designs can be created after copying the result by adding additional colour stops, changing positions, adjusting gradient directions or combining backgrounds with other CSS properties.
