What Is a Cylinder Calculator?
A Cylinder Calculator is an online geometry tool that calculates important measurements of a cylinder from its radius and height. A cylinder has two parallel circular bases joined by a curved surface, and these two dimensions are enough to determine its volume and surface areas.
This calculator is useful for students, teachers, engineers, designers, builders and anyone who needs quick cylinder calculations. Enter the radius and height, select the appropriate unit and the calculator provides the results immediately.
Why Use the Cylinder Calculator?
The Cylinder Calculator brings several common cylindrical geometry calculations together in one simple tool, helping you avoid repeatedly entering formulas into a calculator.
Calculate Volume
Calculate the three-dimensional space contained within the cylinder using its radius and height.
Total Surface Area
Find the combined area of both circular bases and the curved outer surface.
Curved Surface Area
Calculate the area of the curved side of the cylinder without including either circular base.
Base Area
Calculate the area of one circular base using the radius.
Multiple Units
Enter measurements in millimetres, centimetres, metres, inches, feet or yards.
Instant Results
All calculations are performed immediately in your browser without an account or external calculation service.
How to Use the Cylinder Calculator
You only need two measurements to calculate the principal properties of a cylinder: its radius and its height.
- Enter the radius — Enter the distance from the centre of the circular base to its outer edge.
- Enter the height — Enter the perpendicular distance between the cylinder's two circular bases.
- Select the unit — Choose millimetres, centimetres, metres, inches, feet or yards.
- Calculate the results — Select Calculate Cylinder to display the volume, total surface area, curved surface area and base area.
Cylinder Volume and Surface Area Formulas
A cylinder is a three-dimensional shape consisting of two congruent circular bases and a curved surface connecting them. The two measurements needed for the standard cylinder calculations are the radius of the base, represented by r, and the height, represented by h.
The volume of a cylinder is calculated by multiplying the area of its circular base by its height. The formula is V = πr²h. The total surface area of a closed cylinder includes both circular bases and the curved surface, giving the formula A = 2πr² + 2πrh.
Cylinder Volume Formula
The volume formula is V = πr²h. First, the radius is squared to determine the proportional area of the circular base, that value is multiplied by π, and the result is then multiplied by the cylinder's height. If the radius and height are measured in centimetres, the volume is expressed in cubic centimetres.
Cylinder Surface Area Formula
The total surface area of a closed cylinder is A = 2πr² + 2πrh. The first term represents the combined area of the two circular ends, while the second represents the curved surface around the cylinder. The curved surface area alone is 2πrh.
Cylinder Calculator Units and Results
The calculator supports millimetres, centimetres, metres, inches, feet and yards. The selected unit is applied consistently to the radius and height and to the resulting measurements. Length-based measurements use the selected unit, surface areas use square units and volume uses cubic units.
For example, if a cylinder has a radius of 5 centimetres and a height of 10 centimetres, its volume is approximately 785.398 cubic centimetres, its total surface area is approximately 471.239 square centimetres and its curved surface area is approximately 314.159 square centimetres. The calculator uses the full value of π during the calculation and rounds the displayed results for readability.
