What Is a Data Storage Calculator?
A data storage calculator is an online tool for converting quantities of digital information between different data storage units. It can convert values measured in bits, bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes and larger units, as well as binary units such as kibibytes, mebibytes, gibibytes and tebibytes.
Data storage measurements are used for hard drives, solid-state drives, memory cards, USB storage, cloud storage, databases, files and other digital information. Converting between units makes it easier to compare storage capacities and understand the size of files and datasets.
Why Use the Data Storage Calculator?
This calculator provides quick conversions between commonly used decimal and binary data storage units without requiring manual calculations.
Decimal Units
Convert between decimal units including KB, MB, GB, TB, PB and EB using powers of 1,000.
Binary Units
Convert between KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB, PiB and EiB using powers of 1,024.
Bits and Bytes
Convert between individual bits and bytes as well as larger storage units.
Accurate Calculations
Conversions use defined decimal and binary multipliers rather than approximate unit relationships.
Instant Results
Enter a value and receive the converted result immediately without installing software.
Free to Use
The calculator is free to use and works directly in a modern web browser.
How to Use the Data Storage Calculator
Use the calculator to convert any supported data storage quantity into another supported unit.
- Enter an amount — Enter the data storage value you want to convert.
- Select the source unit — Choose whether the value is measured in bits, bytes, decimal units or binary units.
- Select the destination unit — Choose the unit you want the result displayed in.
- Convert the value — Select Convert Data to display the calculated result.
Data Storage Units Explained
Digital information is commonly measured in bits and bytes. A bit is the smallest basic unit of digital information and can represent a binary value. A byte consists of 8 bits and is commonly used as the foundation for measuring file sizes and storage capacity.
Decimal storage units use multiples of 1,000. For example, 1 KB is 1,000 bytes, 1 MB is 1,000,000 bytes, 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes and 1 TB is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes.
Decimal Storage Units
Decimal units include kilobytes (KB), megabytes (MB), gigabytes (GB), terabytes (TB), petabytes (PB) and exabytes (EB). These units use a base of 1,000 and are commonly used when storage manufacturers advertise the capacity of drives and other storage devices.
Binary Storage Units
Binary units use multiples of 1,024 rather than 1,000. The standard names are kibibyte (KiB), mebibyte (MiB), gibibyte (GiB), tebibyte (TiB), pebibyte (PiB) and exbibyte (EiB). For example, 1 GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes.
GB vs GiB and MB vs MiB
GB and GiB are not interchangeable units. A gigabyte (GB) is a decimal unit equal to 1,000,000,000 bytes, while a gibibyte (GiB) is a binary unit equal to 1,073,741,824 bytes. The same distinction applies to MB and MiB, TB and TiB, and the larger corresponding units.
This difference can explain why the capacity reported by an operating system may appear different from the advertised capacity of a storage device. When comparing storage measurements, check whether the value is expressed using decimal or binary units.
The calculator does not round the underlying conversion to a fixed number of decimal places. Results are formatted for readability while retaining appropriate numerical precision for the calculation.
