What Is a Density Calculator?
A density calculator is a tool for calculating the relationship between the mass and volume of a substance or object. Density describes how much mass is contained within a particular volume and is commonly used in physics, chemistry, engineering and materials science.
This calculator can determine density when mass and volume are known, or it can be rearranged to calculate mass or volume when density and one other measurement are available. It automatically handles several common units so that the input values can be compared correctly.
Why Use the Density Calculator?
The calculator provides a quick way to perform density calculations without manually rearranging the formula or converting every measurement before calculating the result.
Calculate Density
Enter mass and volume to calculate the density of an object or material.
Calculate Mass
Use a known density and volume to determine the corresponding mass.
Calculate Volume
Determine volume from a known mass and density.
Multiple Units
Work with common mass, volume and density units without performing manual conversions.
Instant Results
Results are calculated directly in your browser as soon as you submit the values.
Free to Use
Use the calculator without registration, software installation or payment.
How to Use the Density Calculator
Choose the quantity you want to calculate and provide the other two known measurements.
- Choose the calculation. — Select Calculate Density, Calculate Mass or Calculate Volume.
- Enter the known values. — Enter the required measurements into the relevant fields.
- Select the units. — Choose the appropriate unit for each value, such as grams, kilograms, millilitres or cubic metres.
- Calculate the result. — Select Calculate to display the result using the selected units.
Density Formula and Calculation
Density is calculated by dividing mass by volume. The standard formula is ρ = m ÷ V, where ρ represents density, m represents mass and V represents volume. For example, an object with a mass of 500 grams and a volume of 250 cubic centimetres has a density of 2 grams per cubic centimetre.
The same relationship can be rearranged when a different quantity is unknown. Mass can be calculated using m = ρ × V, while volume can be calculated using V = m ÷ ρ. The calculator performs these rearrangements automatically according to the calculation mode selected.
Understanding Mass, Volume and Density
Mass measures the amount of matter in an object, while volume measures the amount of three-dimensional space it occupies. Density combines these two measurements to describe how much mass exists within a unit of volume. A material with greater density contains more mass for the same volume than a material with lower density.
Common Density Units
Density is commonly expressed in grams per cubic centimetre (g/cm³), grams per millilitre (g/mL) or kilograms per cubic metre (kg/m³). These units can be converted between one another, provided the corresponding mass and volume relationships are handled consistently.
Density Calculator Accuracy and Units
The calculator converts the entered values into compatible internal units before performing the calculation. This allows mass and volume to be entered using different supported units while maintaining the correct mathematical relationship between them.
Results are based entirely on the values supplied. The calculator does not determine whether a measurement is experimentally accurate, and the quality of the result therefore depends on the accuracy of the original mass, volume or density measurements. Values must also be greater than zero because density, mass and volume calculations cannot be performed using a zero denominator.
