What Is a Density Calculator?
A Density Calculator is an online tool used to calculate the density of a substance or object from its mass and volume. It can also work backwards to calculate mass when density and volume are known, or volume when density and mass are known.
Density describes how much mass is contained within a given volume. The calculator automatically converts the selected measurements into compatible units before performing the calculation, making it useful for physics, chemistry, engineering, education and everyday measurement tasks.
Why Use the Density Calculator?
The Density Calculator makes density-related calculations faster and reduces the need for manual unit conversions.
Calculate Density
Calculate density when the mass and volume of an object or substance are known.
Calculate Mass
Find mass when density and volume are available.
Calculate Volume
Determine volume when mass and density are known.
Multiple Units
Work with common mass, volume and density units without performing manual conversions first.
Automatic Conversion
The calculator converts measurements internally so the selected units can be used together correctly.
Free to Use
Calculate density, mass or volume online without installing software or creating an account.
How to Use the Density Calculator
Choose the quantity you want to calculate and provide the other two measurements.
- Choose what to calculate — Select Density, Mass or Volume from the calculation menu.
- Enter the known values — Enter the two measurements required for the selected calculation.
- Select the units — Choose the correct unit for each value you enter.
- Calculate the result — Select "Calculate" to display the result and equivalent units.
How to Calculate Density
Density is calculated by dividing mass by volume. The standard formula is ρ = m ÷ V, where ρ represents density, m represents mass and V represents volume. In the SI system, mass is measured in kilograms and volume in cubic metres, producing a density measured in kilograms per cubic metre (kg/m³).
For example, if an object has a mass of 2 kg and a volume of 0.5 m³, its density is 2 ÷ 0.5 = 4 kg/m³. The same relationship can be rearranged to find either of the other quantities when the remaining two values are known.
Density Formula
The main density formula is ρ = m ÷ V. To calculate mass, rearrange the equation to m = ρ × V. To calculate volume, rearrange it to V = m ÷ ρ. These three equations describe the same relationship between density, mass and volume.
Common Density Units
Common density units include kilograms per cubic metre (kg/m³), grams per cubic centimetre (g/cm³), kilograms per litre (kg/L) and pounds per cubic foot (lb/ft³). The calculator converts the selected measurements into compatible units before producing the result.
Understanding Density Calculator Results
Density is a property that relates mass to volume. For a particular material under specified conditions, density can help identify or compare substances. Temperature and pressure can affect the density of some materials, particularly gases and liquids, so reference conditions may matter when comparing calculated values with published data.
The calculator requires positive, non-zero values for the quantities used as divisors. A zero volume cannot be used to calculate density, and a zero density cannot be used to calculate volume. Results are mathematical calculations based solely on the values entered and do not account for measurement uncertainty, material composition or environmental conditions.
