How to Calculate the Determinant of a Matrix
The determinant of a matrix is a scalar value calculated from the elements of a square matrix. For a 2 × 2 matrix with elements a, b, c and d, the determinant is calculated as ad − bc. Larger matrices can be evaluated using methods such as cofactor expansion or row reduction.
This determinant calculator uses numerical elimination with pivoting. The matrix is transformed into an equivalent triangular form while accounting for row swaps. The determinant can then be obtained from the product of the diagonal elements, with the appropriate adjustment for row exchanges.
Determinant of a 2 × 2 Matrix
For a 2 × 2 matrix, the determinant is found by multiplying the two values on the main diagonal, multiplying the two values on the other diagonal and subtracting the second product from the first. For a matrix containing a, b, c and d, this gives ad − bc.
Determinant of a 3 × 3 Matrix
A 3 × 3 determinant can be calculated using cofactor expansion, a standard determinant formula or row-reduction techniques. The calculator handles the numerical calculation automatically after the three rows and three columns have been entered.
Understanding Determinant Results
A determinant can be positive, negative or zero. The numerical value depends on the elements of the matrix and the mathematical relationships between its rows and columns.
A determinant of zero has particular significance because it means the square matrix is singular. A singular matrix does not have an ordinary inverse. When the determinant is non-zero, the square matrix is non-singular and has an inverse.
For matrices containing decimal values, the calculation is performed using JavaScript number arithmetic. Very large values, extremely small values or calculations involving substantial floating-point precision requirements may be affected by the limitations of standard computer number representation.
