What Is a Dividend Tax Calculator?

A dividend tax calculator helps you estimate how much UK tax may be payable on dividend income. The amount of dividend tax you pay depends not only on the dividends you receive, but also on your other taxable income because your income tax bands determine which dividend tax rate applies.

This free Dividend Tax Calculator is designed for the 2026/27 tax year, which runs from 6 April 2026 to 5 April 2027. It takes your dividend income and other taxable income into account, applies the standard Personal Allowance where applicable, and then estimates the dividend tax due after the £500 dividend allowance.

Why Use Dividend Tax Calculator?

Dividend tax can be difficult to estimate because dividends are taxed according to where they sit within your overall income. This calculator provides a quick estimate without requiring a spreadsheet or manual tax-band calculations.

1

3

Dividend Allowance

4

Tax Band Breakdown

Shows how your dividends are distributed across the basic, higher and additional dividend tax rates.

Use the calculator as often as needed to estimate your dividend tax without registration or payment.

UK Dividend Tax Rates for 2026/27

For the 2026/27 tax year, the UK dividend allowance is £500. Dividend income above this allowance is taxed according to the Income Tax band in which the dividends fall. The dividend ordinary rate is 10.75%, the dividend upper rate is 35.75%, and the dividend additional rate is 39.35%.

Dividend tax rates are different from the standard Income Tax rates applied to employment and other non-dividend income. Your other taxable income is generally considered first when determining how much room remains in each tax band for dividends.

How Dividend Tax Is Calculated

The calculation begins with your total income and applies the Personal Allowance where you are entitled to one. The Personal Allowance is £12,570 for 2026/27 and is reduced by £1 for every £2 of adjusted net income above £100,000, potentially reducing to zero at £125,140.

Basic, Higher and Additional Dividend Tax

Once your other taxable income has been taken into account, your dividends are allocated through the remaining tax bands. Dividends above the £500 allowance are taxed at 10.75% while within the basic rate band, 35.75% while within the higher rate band and 39.35% above the additional rate threshold.

For example, someone with substantial employment income may already have used most or all of their basic rate band before receiving dividends. In that situation, a larger proportion of their dividends can be subject to the higher dividend rate rather than the basic dividend rate.

Understanding Dividend Tax Calculations

Dividends are payments made by companies to shareholders from available profits. If you receive dividends outside tax-advantaged arrangements such as an ISA, the dividends can form part of your taxable income. The dividend allowance means the first £500 of dividend income is taxed at 0% for 2026/27, although it still uses space within the relevant tax band.

Dividends received from shares held inside an ISA are generally not subject to dividend tax. They should therefore not be entered into this calculator as taxable dividend income.

The calculator provides an estimate rather than a formal tax calculation or Self Assessment return. It does not cover every possible relief, allowance, deduction or source of income. Your actual liability can therefore differ, particularly if you have complex financial circumstances.

For the 2026/27 tax year, the dividend tax rates apply across the UK. Scottish taxpayers have different Income Tax rates for non-savings income, but dividend income is subject to the UK dividend rates used by this calculator.
