Drywall Calculator
Calculate how many drywall sheets you need for walls and ceilings, including openings and a practical waste allowance.
Drywall Calculator
Enter your wall and ceiling measurements, subtract doors and windows, select your drywall sheet size and choose a waste allowance to calculate the estimated number of sheets required.
1. Enter Your Surface Measurements
Enter dimensions in metres. Leave a section at zero if you do not need to calculate it.
2. Doors, Windows & Other Openings
Add openings that should be deducted from the wall area. Ceiling openings are not deducted here.
3. Drywall Sheet Size & Waste
Choose a common sheet size or enter your own dimensions.
Your Drywall Estimate
This is an area-based estimate. Actual sheet requirements can vary because of room layout, sheet orientation, joint placement, cutting patterns, framing, damaged sheets and installation practices.
What Is a Drywall Calculator?
A drywall calculator is a tool used to estimate the amount of drywall or plasterboard needed to cover walls and ceilings. It calculates the surface area that needs to be boarded and converts that area into an estimated number of sheets based on the sheet dimensions selected.
This calculator can be useful when planning a renovation, new room, partition wall, ceiling installation or other interior construction project. It can also account for doors, windows and other wall openings, as well as an allowance for cutting and material waste.
Why Use a Drywall Calculator?
Estimating drywall manually can involve several separate area calculations. This tool combines those calculations into a single estimate, making it easier to determine how much board may be required before purchasing materials.
Calculate Wall Area
Calculate the total area of walls from their combined length and height.
Include Ceilings
Add ceiling length and width to include a ceiling in the same drywall estimate.
Deduct Openings
Subtract the area of doors, windows and other wall openings from the total wall area.
Choose Sheet Size
Use common drywall sheet dimensions or enter a custom sheet size for your project.
Add Waste
Apply a configurable waste allowance to account for cutting, fitting and damaged material.
Free to Use
Calculate your drywall requirements directly in your browser without registration or payment.
How to Use the Drywall Calculator
Enter the dimensions of the surfaces you want to cover and provide details about any wall openings. The calculator then estimates the required drywall sheets.
- Enter the wall dimensions — Enter the combined wall length and wall height in metres.
- Enter the ceiling dimensions — If you are boarding a ceiling, enter its length and width.
- Add openings — Add the width and height of doors, windows and other wall openings that should be deducted.
- Select the sheet size and waste allowance — Choose a drywall sheet size and an appropriate waste percentage, then select Calculate Drywall.
How to Calculate How Much Drywall You Need
The basic drywall calculation starts by determining the area of the surfaces that need to be covered. For a wall, multiply the wall length by the wall height. For a rectangular ceiling, multiply the ceiling length by its width. If several walls are being covered, their individual lengths can be added together before multiplying by the wall height.
Doors, windows and other openings can then be deducted from the wall area. After the net area has been calculated, a waste allowance can be added to account for offcuts and material that cannot be reused efficiently. The adjusted area is divided by the area of one drywall sheet and rounded up to the next whole sheet.
Calculating Drywall Sheet Coverage
The coverage of a drywall sheet is calculated by multiplying its length by its width. For example, a sheet measuring 2.4 metres by 1.2 metres has a nominal surface area of 2.88 square metres. The calculator uses the dimensions you select to determine the nominal sheet coverage.
Why Drywall Waste Matters
The theoretical number of sheets based only on surface area does not always represent the quantity that needs to be purchased. Sheets have to be cut around corners, openings, fixtures and other features. The resulting offcuts may not always be suitable for another section of the installation. A waste allowance therefore provides a more practical purchasing estimate.
Drywall Calculation Formula
For a wall, the basic formula is: wall area = wall length × wall height. For a ceiling, the formula is: ceiling area = ceiling length × ceiling width. The total opening area is then subtracted from the wall area to produce the net drywall area.
After the net area has been calculated, the waste allowance is applied. The resulting adjusted area is divided by the selected drywall sheet area, and the result is rounded up to a whole number because drywall sheets cannot normally be purchased as fractions.
For example, if the net area is 40 m² and a 10% waste allowance is selected, the adjusted area is 44 m². If each sheet covers 2.88 m², the area-based estimate is 15.28 sheets, which means 16 sheets are required based on this calculation.
The result should be treated as an estimate rather than an installation plan. Room geometry, corners, staggered joints, sheet orientation, framing spacing and the ability to reuse offcuts can affect the actual number of sheets required.
