What Is an Electricity Cost Calculator?
An electricity cost calculator estimates how much electricity an appliance, device or other electrical load consumes and how much that electricity is likely to cost. The calculation uses the device's power rating, how long it operates and the price paid for each kilowatt-hour (kWh).
This tool is useful when comparing appliances, estimating household energy expenses, checking the running cost of electrical equipment or understanding how changes in usage can affect electricity consumption. It can calculate estimated daily, monthly and yearly energy usage and costs.
Why Use an Electricity Cost Calculator?
Calculating appliance running costs manually can require several unit conversions and calculations. This tool performs those calculations automatically and presents the results in an easy-to-read format.
Calculate Energy Usage
Convert appliance power and operating time into estimated electricity consumption in kilowatt-hours.
Estimate Running Costs
Apply your electricity rate to calculate the estimated cost of operating the appliance.
Daily Estimates
See how much energy an appliance uses and how much it costs to operate each day.
Monthly Estimates
Estimate monthly electricity consumption and running costs based on your typical usage.
Yearly Estimates
Project energy usage and electricity costs across the number of months selected.
Free to Use
Calculate electricity costs directly in your browser without registration, software installation or payment.
How to Use the Electricity Cost Calculator
Enter the information requested by the calculator to estimate the energy consumption and running cost of an appliance or electrical device.
- Enter the power consumption — Enter the appliance's power rating in watts (W), as shown on its label, specification sheet or manufacturer's documentation.
- Enter the number of devices — If you are calculating multiple identical devices, enter the quantity being used.
- Enter usage time and days — Enter the average number of hours the device operates each day and the number of days it is used per month.
- Enter the electricity rate — Enter the price you pay per kilowatt-hour and select the number of months to use for the yearly estimate, then select Calculate Electricity Cost.
How to Calculate Electricity Cost
Electricity costs are based on the amount of electrical energy consumed and the price charged for that energy. Electrical power is commonly specified in watts, while electricity suppliers charge for energy in kilowatt-hours. Because 1 kilowatt equals 1,000 watts, a wattage value must first be converted to kilowatts before calculating energy consumption.
The basic calculation is to divide power in watts by 1,000 to obtain kilowatts, then multiply the result by the number of hours the appliance operates. Multiplying the resulting energy consumption by the electricity rate gives the estimated running cost.
Electricity Cost Formula
The basic electricity cost formula is: Electricity cost = power in kW × operating hours × electricity rate per kWh. For example, a 1,000-watt appliance uses 1 kW of power. If it operates for 5 hours at a rate of £0.30 per kWh, it consumes 5 kWh and costs approximately £1.50 to operate for those five hours.
Understanding Kilowatt-Hours
A kilowatt-hour (kWh) measures energy consumption rather than the power rating of an appliance. An appliance using 1 kilowatt continuously for one hour consumes 1 kWh. Similarly, an appliance using 500 watts for two hours consumes 1 kWh, assuming its power consumption remains constant.
Understanding Your Electricity Cost Estimate
The calculator provides an estimate based on the values entered. Actual electricity consumption may differ because many appliances do not continuously operate at their maximum rated power. Refrigerators, heating systems, washing machines and other equipment may cycle on and off during operation.
The calculation also covers the electricity unit cost only. It does not include standing charges, taxes, discounts, supplier fees, time-of-use tariff variations or other fixed or variable charges that may appear on an electricity bill. For the most accurate estimate, use the electricity unit rate from your current tariff and use realistic operating times.
