What Is an Energy Consumption Calculator?
An energy consumption calculator estimates how much electrical energy an appliance, device or group of devices uses over a given period. It uses the equipment's power rating and operating time to calculate energy consumption, normally expressed in kilowatt-hours (kWh).
The calculator can be used for household appliances, office equipment, lighting, computers, heating equipment and many other electrical devices. By changing the power rating and operating schedule, you can compare the estimated energy consumption of different devices and usage patterns.
Why Use an Energy Consumption Calculator?
Energy consumption depends on both the power used by equipment and how long it operates. This calculator performs the required unit conversion and time calculations automatically, making it easier to estimate electricity usage without performing the calculations manually.
Calculate Daily Usage
Calculate the estimated amount of electrical energy consumed during a typical day.
Calculate Monthly Usage
Estimate monthly energy consumption using the number of days the equipment is used.
Calculate Longer Periods
Project energy consumption across a selected period of up to 12 months.
Support Multiple Devices
Calculate the combined consumption of multiple identical appliances or devices.
kWh and Wh Results
View calculated energy consumption in kilowatt-hours or watt-hours depending on your preference.
Free and Browser-Based
Calculate energy consumption directly in your browser without registration or additional software.
How to Use the Energy Consumption Calculator
Enter the power and usage information for the appliance or equipment you want to analyse. The calculator then converts the power rating into energy consumption based on the operating schedule.
- Enter the power consumption — Enter the device's rated power in watts (W). This information is normally shown on the device label, power supply or manufacturer's specifications.
- Enter the number of devices — Enter how many identical devices are operating under the same conditions.
- Enter the operating time — Enter the average number of hours each device operates per day.
- Enter the usage period — Enter the average number of days used per month and the number of months to include in the longer-term estimate, then select Calculate Energy Consumption.
How to Calculate Energy Consumption
Energy consumption can be calculated from electrical power and operating time. Because appliance power is commonly specified in watts and energy consumption is commonly measured in kilowatt-hours, the first step is to convert watts to kilowatts by dividing the power value by 1,000.
The resulting power in kilowatts is then multiplied by the number of hours the equipment operates. For multiple identical devices, the result is multiplied by the number of devices. To estimate consumption over a longer period, the daily energy consumption is multiplied by the number of days used.
Energy Consumption Formula
The basic formula is energy consumption = power in kilowatts × operating time in hours. For example, a 1,000-watt appliance has a power rating of 1 kW. If it operates for 5 hours, its estimated consumption is 5 kWh. If the same appliance operates for 5 hours every day for 30 days, the estimated monthly consumption is 150 kWh.
Watts, Kilowatts and Kilowatt-Hours
Watts (W) measure electrical power, while kilowatts (kW) are a larger unit of power equal to 1,000 watts. Kilowatt-hours (kWh) measure energy consumption. Keeping these units separate is important when estimating how much electricity a device uses over time.
Understanding Energy Consumption Estimates
The calculator assumes that the appliance operates at the entered power level for the stated amount of time. Actual energy consumption can be different if the device changes its power draw during operation. Many appliances, including refrigerators, heating systems, washing machines and some computers, do not continuously operate at their maximum rated power.
For a more representative estimate, use the typical operating power where that information is available and enter a realistic average operating schedule. If you are using the result to estimate electricity costs, apply the appropriate electricity rate separately because energy consumption in kWh and electricity price are different measurements.
