EV Range Calculator
Estimate how far an electric vehicle can travel from its battery capacity, charge level, energy consumption and battery reserve.
EV Range Calculator
Enter your battery and efficiency information to estimate your available electric vehicle driving range.
What Is an EV Range Calculator?
An EV range calculator estimates how far an electric vehicle can travel using its available battery energy and expected energy consumption. By entering the battery capacity, current charge level and vehicle efficiency, you can calculate an estimated driving range in miles and kilometres.
This calculator is useful when planning journeys, comparing electric vehicles, estimating the distance available from a partial charge or understanding how changes in energy consumption can affect an EV's expected range.
Why Use EV Range Calculator?
The calculator provides a straightforward estimate based on the battery energy you expect to use and the vehicle's stated or estimated energy consumption.
Battery Capacity
Enter the usable battery capacity in kilowatt-hours to establish the energy available to the vehicle.
Partial Charges
Calculate range between a current battery percentage and a target charge level rather than assuming a full battery.
Energy Consumption
Use either kWh per 100 km or miles per kWh to represent your vehicle's energy efficiency.
Battery Reserve
Keep a chosen percentage of battery energy out of the calculation for a more conservative range estimate.
Miles and Kilometres
View the estimated range in both miles and kilometres regardless of the consumption unit selected.

All calculations take place directly in your browser without requiring an account or external service.
How to Use EV Range Calculator
Enter the battery and efficiency information for your electric vehicle, then calculate the estimated distance available from the selected charge range.
- Enter the battery capacity — Enter the vehicle's usable battery capacity in kWh where that information is available.
- Enter energy consumption — Enter the vehicle's expected energy consumption and select whether it is expressed as kWh per 100 km or miles per kWh.
- Set the charge levels — Enter your current battery percentage and the target charge percentage you intend to use.
- Set a battery reserve and calculate — Enter the percentage you want to keep in reserve, then select Calculate EV Range to view the estimated distance.
How Far Can an Electric Car Travel on a Full Charge?
An electric car's driving range depends primarily on its usable battery capacity and energy consumption. A larger battery can store more energy, while a more efficient vehicle can travel further using the same amount of energy. For example, an EV with 75 kWh of usable battery capacity and consumption of 18 kWh per 100 km has a theoretical full-charge range of approximately 417 km before accounting for a battery reserve.
Using a partial charge changes the amount of energy available for the journey. If an electric vehicle starts at 20% and is expected to use energy up to 100%, only the corresponding 80% of its usable battery capacity is included. A reserve can then be deducted to provide a more conservative estimate rather than assuming every available percentage will be used.
How EV Range Is Calculated
When consumption is entered as kWh per 100 km, the calculator first determines the usable energy by multiplying battery capacity by the difference between the target and current charge percentages. The selected battery reserve is then excluded. The remaining energy is divided by the vehicle's kWh-per-100-km consumption and multiplied by 100 to produce the estimated range in kilometres.
What Affects Electric Vehicle Range?
Real-world EV range can be affected by motorway speeds, acceleration, traffic, hills, temperature, wind, rain, heating, air conditioning, vehicle load, tyre pressure and driving style. Cold weather can have a particularly noticeable effect because battery performance and cabin heating can increase energy consumption. Using realistic consumption figures from your own driving conditions can therefore produce a more useful estimate than relying only on laboratory figures.
EV Range Calculator Accuracy and Limitations
This calculator provides an estimate rather than a guaranteed real-world driving range. Its result is mathematically based on the battery capacity, charge levels, reserve and energy consumption that you enter. Actual range can be higher or lower depending on driving conditions and the way the vehicle manages its battery.
Where possible, use the vehicle manufacturer's usable battery capacity and a realistic energy consumption figure. Gross battery capacity may be higher than the energy available to the driver because modern electric vehicles can maintain protective buffers. Similarly, published efficiency figures may differ from real-world consumption. The calculator does not account for route elevation, weather, traffic, cabin climate control or other individual journey conditions.
