Fence Calculation Results
| Material | Estimated quantity | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Fence panels | — | Calculated for a straight run using the panel and post widths entered. |
| Fence posts | — | One post is allowed at each end, plus one between each panel bay. |
| Gravel boards | — | Estimated at one gravel board per panel bay when selected. |
| Concrete | — | Based solely on the post-hole dimensions entered. |
What Is a Fence Calculator?
A fence calculator is an online planning tool that helps estimate the materials needed to construct a fencing run. By entering the total fence length and the dimensions of the panels and posts, you can calculate the approximate number of fence panels and posts required.
This calculator also estimates gravel boards and post-hole concrete where those options are selected. It is useful for homeowners, DIY projects, tradespeople and anyone preparing an initial fencing materials list before measuring a site and purchasing supplies.
Why Use a Fence Calculator?
Fencing quantities can be difficult to estimate when panel widths, post widths and installation gaps all need to be considered. A fence calculator provides a quick starting point for working out the basic materials for a straight fencing run.
Calculate Fence Panels
Estimate the number of complete fence panels required for the total length of your fencing run.
Estimate Fence Posts
Calculate the number of end and intermediate posts needed for the estimated panel bays.
Include Gravel Boards
Estimate the number of gravel boards required beneath the fence panels.
Estimate Concrete
Calculate an approximate post-hole concrete volume from the dimensions you provide.
Add Waste Allowance
Include an allowance for cutting, damaged materials and other expected project waste.
Use Multiple Units
Enter measurements in millimetres, centimetres, metres, inches or feet using the built-in unit selector.
How to Use the Fence Calculator
Use the calculator to produce an initial estimate of the main fencing materials needed for a straight run.
- Enter the fence dimensions — Select your measurement unit and enter the total length and panel dimensions.
- Enter post and gravel board details — Provide the post width and choose whether gravel boards will be installed.
- Enter post-hole details — Provide the approximate width and depth of each post hole to estimate concrete volume.
- Calculate the requirements — Select “Calculate Fence Requirements” to view the estimated panels, posts, gravel boards and concrete.
How to Calculate Fence Panels and Posts
Calculating fencing materials starts with the total length of the proposed fence. For a simple straight run, the available distance is divided into panel bays. Each bay normally consists of one fence panel positioned between two posts. Because a post occupies part of the overall fence length, the usable panel width is affected by the post width.
This calculator determines the number of panel bays required by dividing the total fence length by the combined panel width and post width, then rounding up to a whole bay. The number of posts is then calculated as one more than the number of bays because a straight run requires a post at both ends.
Fence Panel Quantity Calculation
If a panel is 1.83 metres wide and the post is 100 millimetres wide, each complete bay occupies approximately 1.93 metres along the fence line. A fence measuring 15 metres therefore requires the next whole number of bays sufficient to cover the run. The calculator uses this approach to avoid producing a fractional number of panels.
Fence Post and Gravel Board Estimates
For a straight fence without gates or corners, the basic post calculation is the number of panel bays plus one. A fence with eight panel bays therefore requires nine posts. Real installations may require additional specialist posts at corners, gates, changes in direction or other locations.
When gravel boards are selected, the calculator estimates one gravel board for every panel bay. Gravel boards are commonly used to separate the bottom of a fence panel from the ground, helping reduce direct contact with soil and moisture. The exact product and installation method should be selected according to the fencing system being installed.
Panel bays = ceiling(fence length ÷ (panel width + post width))Fence posts = panel bays + 1Gravel boards = panel baysConcrete volume = number of posts × post-hole width² × post-hole depth
Fence Calculator Limitations and Planning Notes
The calculator assumes a straight fence run with evenly distributed panel bays. Actual fencing projects are often more complicated. Corners, gates, changes in direction and uneven boundaries can require additional posts and different panel arrangements.
If the measured fence length is not an exact multiple of the panel bay width, the final panel may need to be cut or a different installation arrangement may be required. The calculated number of panels therefore represents the minimum number of complete panel sections needed to cover the estimated run under the calculator's assumptions.
The concrete estimate is based on a simple rectangular post-hole volume. Actual concrete quantities depend on the shape and size of the hole, the post dimensions, ground conditions, drainage requirements and installation method. Concrete is also often purchased in bags rather than by volume, so the final number of bags should be checked against the manufacturer's stated yield.
The waste allowance provides an additional material quantity for planning purposes, but it does not account for every possible installation issue. Always take accurate site measurements and check the dimensions of the specific panels, posts, gravel boards and other products you intend to purchase before ordering materials.
