What Is a Fuel Cost Calculator?

A Fuel Cost Calculator estimates the amount of fuel a vehicle will use during a journey and calculates the corresponding fuel cost. It uses the journey distance, the vehicle's fuel consumption and the price paid per litre to provide a straightforward estimate of the money required for fuel.

This calculator can be useful for planning road trips, estimating commuting expenses, comparing vehicle running costs, budgeting for business journeys or working out the likely cost of a return journey. It can also help drivers understand how changes in fuel prices or vehicle efficiency affect travel costs.

Why Use a Fuel Cost Calculator?

A fuel cost calculation turns a vehicle's fuel consumption figure into a practical journey cost. By changing the distance, consumption or fuel price, you can quickly compare different journeys and driving assumptions.

1

Fuel Cost

Estimate the total amount you are expected to spend on fuel for a journey.

2

Fuel Usage

Calculate the estimated number of litres required based on distance and consumption.

3

Cost per Kilometre

See the estimated fuel expense for each kilometre travelled.

4

Cost per 100 km

Compare the estimated fuel cost of travelling 100 kilometres.

5

Journey Planning

Estimate fuel expenditure before commuting, travelling or planning a longer road journey.

How to Use the Fuel Cost Calculator

Enter the figures for your vehicle and journey, then calculate the estimated fuel requirement and cost.

  1. Enter the journey distance — Enter the total distance you expect to travel in kilometres. For a return journey, include both directions.
  2. Enter fuel consumption — Enter the vehicle's fuel consumption in litres per 100 kilometres (L/100 km).
  3. Enter the fuel price — Enter the current or expected price of fuel per litre.
  4. Calculate the cost — Click Calculate Fuel Cost to see the estimated fuel used, total cost, cost per kilometre and cost per 100 kilometres.

How to Calculate Fuel Cost

To calculate the fuel required for a journey, divide the distance travelled by 100 and multiply the result by the vehicle's fuel consumption in litres per 100 kilometres. The formula is: fuel used (litres) = distance (km) ÷ 100 × fuel consumption (L/100 km).

Once the estimated fuel volume has been calculated, multiply it by the price per litre. The fuel cost formula is: fuel cost = fuel used (litres) × fuel price per litre. For example, a 200 km journey in a vehicle consuming 7.5 L/100 km requires approximately 15 litres of fuel. At £1.50 per litre, the estimated fuel cost would therefore be £22.50.

Fuel Consumption and Journey Distance

Fuel consumption is commonly expressed as litres per 100 kilometres (L/100 km). A lower L/100 km figure indicates that a vehicle uses less fuel to travel the same distance. For example, a vehicle consuming 5 L/100 km will generally require less fuel for a 100 km journey than a vehicle consuming 8 L/100 km.

Fuel Price and Running Costs

Fuel price has a direct effect on the cost of travelling. If fuel consumption and journey distance remain unchanged, a higher price per litre increases the total journey cost proportionally. This makes the calculator useful for comparing current fuel prices, estimating future journey costs and assessing how fuel-efficient different vehicles may be.

Understanding Fuel Cost Estimates

The calculator uses the fuel consumption figure you provide. A manufacturer's advertised consumption figure may differ from real-world consumption because actual fuel economy depends on driving conditions. Traffic, speed, acceleration, weather, terrain, vehicle load, tyre pressure, vehicle condition and the use of heating or air conditioning can all affect fuel consumption.

For a more representative result, use an average fuel consumption figure based on your normal driving conditions. If your vehicle displays live or historical fuel economy data, a real-world average may provide a better estimate than a laboratory or manufacturer's test figure. The calculator estimates fuel expenditure only and does not include tolls, parking, insurance, servicing, depreciation, road charges or other travel expenses.

Frequently Asked Questions

A Fuel Cost Calculator estimates how much a journey will cost in fuel using the distance travelled, vehicle fuel consumption and fuel price. It can also calculate the estimated amount of fuel used and the cost per kilometre.
Fuel cost can be calculated by dividing the journey distance by 100, multiplying by fuel consumption in litres per 100 kilometres, and then multiplying the fuel used by the price per litre.
Enter the vehicle's fuel consumption in litres per 100 kilometres (L/100 km). You can use a manufacturer's figure or, preferably, a measured real-world average for the type of driving being estimated.
Yes. Enter the total distance for the complete journey. For a return journey, enter the distance for both directions or simply double the one-way distance.
No. The calculator estimates fuel costs only. It does not include insurance, servicing, depreciation, road charges, parking, tolls or other journey expenses.
The calculation is mathematically accurate for the values entered, but the actual fuel used can vary because of traffic, speed, weather, terrain, driving style, vehicle load, tyre pressure, vehicle condition and other factors.
