Future Value Calculator
Calculate how much an initial investment or savings amount could be worth in the future with interest, compounding and regular contributions.
Future Value Calculator
Enter your starting amount, contribution, interest rate and investment period to estimate the future value of your money.
Estimated Future Value
Based on the assumptions entered above, your projected balance at the end of the selected period is:
This calculator provides an illustrative estimate only. Actual results can differ because interest rates, investment returns, fees, taxes, inflation and contribution timing may change.
What Is a Future Value Calculator?
A Future Value Calculator estimates what an amount of money could be worth at a specified point in the future when interest, investment growth and regular contributions are taken into account. It can help turn an interest rate and time period into a projected future balance that is easier to understand.
This type of calculator can be useful for savings plans, investments, long-term financial projections and other situations where money may grow over time. You can enter an initial amount, add recurring contributions and select how frequently the interest is compounded to create an estimate based on your assumptions.
Why Use Future Value Calculator?
Calculating future value manually can involve several variables, particularly when regular contributions and compound interest are involved. This calculator brings those inputs together so you can quickly compare different assumptions and see how they affect a projected balance.
Initial Investment
Enter an existing savings or investment balance and see how it could grow over your chosen period.
Regular Contributions
Include monthly, quarterly or annual contributions to model an ongoing savings or investment plan.
Compound Growth
Choose how frequently interest is compounded to create a more detailed future value projection.
Flexible Time Period
Project your money over periods from one year up to 100 years.
Instant Results
Calculate the projected future value directly in your browser without submitting your financial information to a server.
Free to Use
Use the Future Value Calculator as often as needed without registration, payment or a subscription.
How to Use Future Value Calculator
Enter the details of your savings or investment scenario and the calculator will estimate the balance at the end of your selected period.
- Enter your initial amount — Enter the amount you are starting with, such as an existing savings balance or investment.
- Add regular contributions — Enter an optional recurring contribution and select whether it is made monthly, quarterly or annually.
- Enter the growth assumptions — Choose an annual interest or investment growth rate, compounding frequency and the number of years.
- Calculate the future value — Select “Calculate Future Value” to see the projected balance, total contributions and estimated growth.
How Future Value Is Calculated
Future value calculations are based on the principle that money can increase in value over time when it earns interest or investment returns. The amount of growth depends on the starting balance, rate of return, time period and frequency with which growth is compounded.
When regular contributions are included, each contribution has its own period of time in which it can potentially earn interest or investment growth. A contribution made near the beginning of a projection therefore has more time to grow than one made near the end. The calculator accounts for this difference when producing its estimate.
Compound Interest and Future Value
Compound interest means that previously earned interest becomes part of the balance and can subsequently earn additional interest. The effect becomes increasingly important over longer periods because growth can itself generate further growth. The compounding frequency determines how often the balance is updated during the year.
Regular Savings Contributions
Regular contributions can make a substantial difference to a future balance, particularly when they are maintained over many years. A monthly contribution may appear relatively small in isolation but can become a significant portion of the final balance when accumulated over a long period and combined with compound growth.
Understanding Your Future Value Estimate
The future value shown by this calculator is a mathematical projection rather than a guarantee. It assumes that the annual rate you enter remains unchanged throughout the entire calculation period and that contributions are made consistently according to the selected schedule.
For investments, actual returns can fluctuate considerably from year to year. Investment charges, taxes, inflation, withdrawals and changes to contributions can also affect the amount ultimately available. For savings accounts, the interest rate may change during the period rather than remaining constant.
The calculator does not account for inflation or attempt to determine the purchasing power of the future balance. A future balance expressed in pounds may therefore buy less than the same nominal amount today if prices increase over time. The result should be used as a planning illustration rather than financial advice.
