What Is a Gravel Calculator?

A gravel calculator is an online tool that estimates how much gravel or loose aggregate is required to cover a defined area. By entering the length, width and depth of the project, you can calculate the approximate volume of material required and convert that volume into an estimated weight.

This gravel calculator can be useful when planning driveways, garden paths, patios, landscaping areas, drainage projects and other applications where gravel is spread to a specified depth. It also allows you to account for material wastage and use a custom gravel density when you have information from your aggregate supplier.

Why Use a Gravel Calculator?

Calculating aggregate requirements manually can involve several unit conversions and volume calculations. This tool performs the calculations automatically and provides both volume and weight estimates from the information you supply.

1

Calculate Gravel Volume

Calculate the basic volume required from the length, width and depth of your project area.

2

Multiple Measurement Units

Enter dimensions in metres, centimetres, millimetres, feet or inches without performing manual conversions.

3

Weight Estimate

Convert the calculated gravel volume into an estimated weight using a custom density value.

4

Wastage Allowance

Add a percentage allowance to account for practical material losses and variations in the project area.

5

Cubic Metres and Feet

View the estimated material volume in both cubic metres and cubic feet for easier ordering and comparison.

6

Free and Private

The calculation runs directly in your browser without requiring an account or sending your measurements to a server.

How to Use the Gravel Calculator

Enter the dimensions of the area you want to cover and provide the gravel density and wastage allowance for your project.

  1. Enter the length, width and depth — Measure the area you intend to cover and enter all three dimensions using the same unit.
  2. Select the dimension unit — Choose metres, centimetres, millimetres, feet or inches to match the measurements you entered.
  3. Enter the gravel density and wastage — The default density is 1,800 kg/m³ and the default wastage allowance is 10%. Adjust these values when you have more specific project information.
  4. Calculate the gravel required — Select Calculate Gravel to see the estimated volume, cubic feet, kilograms and tonnes.

Calculate How Much Gravel You Need

The amount of gravel required depends primarily on the surface area and the depth of the gravel layer. The calculator first converts your measurements into metres, calculates the area and multiplies it by the required depth to determine the base volume. A wastage allowance can then be added to produce a practical ordering estimate.

For example, an area measuring 10 metres long and 4 metres wide has a surface area of 40 square metres. If gravel is required to a depth of 50 millimetres, or 0.05 metres, the base volume is 2 cubic metres. The final amount will be higher if you include a wastage allowance.

Gravel Depth and Coverage

The appropriate gravel depth depends on what the gravel is being used for, the aggregate size, the condition of the underlying surface and the construction method. A decorative garden area may have different requirements from a driveway or access route. Measure or determine the required finished depth for your particular project before calculating the quantity.

Gravel Weight, Density and Ordering

Gravel is commonly ordered by weight or volume. The conversion between these quantities depends on bulk density, which can vary substantially between different aggregates. Factors such as stone type, particle size, grading, moisture and compaction can all affect the actual density. For the most accurate estimate, use the density supplied by the gravel or aggregate supplier.

Understanding the Gravel Calculation

The basic volume calculation is length × width × depth. The dimensions are converted to metres before this calculation is performed, producing a volume in cubic metres. The calculator then applies your wastage allowance and multiplies the resulting volume by the selected gravel density to estimate the material weight.

The default density of 1,800 kg/m³ is provided as a general estimating value rather than a guaranteed density for every type of gravel. Actual material quantities can differ because aggregate is not a perfectly uniform material. For purchasing, use the supplier's product information whenever it is available and consider ordering an appropriate amount above the theoretical minimum where site conditions justify it.

Frequently Asked Questions

A gravel calculator estimates the volume and approximate weight of gravel required from the length, width and depth of an area. This calculator can also include a wastage allowance in the final estimate.
Multiply the length by the width and depth of the area to obtain its volume. Convert the volume to the required unit and multiply it by the estimated gravel density to calculate approximate weight. A wastage allowance can then be added to the quantity required.
The required depth depends on the application, existing ground conditions and the type and size of aggregate. A driveway, garden path, patio or decorative area may have different requirements, so use the depth specified for your particular project rather than relying on a universal depth.
The calculator uses an editable default density of 1,800 kg per cubic metre. Actual bulk density varies according to the gravel type, grading, moisture content and compaction, so the supplier's stated density should be used where available.
Yes. You can enter a wastage allowance as a percentage. The calculator adds this allowance to the base volume so the estimate can account for material lost through handling, uneven surfaces and other practical factors.
No. The result is an estimate. Actual quantities can vary because gravel density, particle size, moisture, compaction, ground conditions and installation methods differ. For purchasing, use supplier information where available.
