Growth Rate Calculator
Calculate growth rate, percentage change, absolute change and annualised growth between two values quickly and accurately.
Growth Rate Calculator
Enter your initial and final values to calculate the percentage growth or decrease. You can also enter the number of years to calculate an annualised growth rate.
The final value is higher than the initial value, representing positive growth.
((Final Value − Initial Value) ÷ Initial Value) × 100
What Is a Growth Rate Calculator?
A Growth Rate Calculator determines how much a value has increased or decreased between a starting point and an ending point. The result is expressed as a percentage, making it easier to compare changes in business performance, revenue, sales, customers, website traffic, investments and other measurable figures.
The calculator is useful whenever you need to measure change between two values. Enter the initial value and final value to calculate the absolute difference, percentage change and growth rate. You can also specify a period in years to calculate an annualised growth rate for longer-term comparisons.
Why Use Growth Rate Calculator?
Calculating growth manually is straightforward, but a dedicated calculator makes repeated comparisons faster and reduces the chance of arithmetic errors. It also provides several related measurements from the same two values.
Instant Growth Rate
Calculate the percentage increase or decrease between two values immediately.
Absolute Change
See the exact numerical difference between the initial and final values.
Percentage Change
Measure the size and direction of the change as a percentage of the original value.
Annualised Growth
Calculate an equivalent yearly growth rate when comparing values over multiple years.
Business Analysis
Use growth calculations to evaluate revenue, sales, customers, traffic and other business metrics.
Free and Private
The calculations run directly in your browser without requiring an account or sending your figures to a server.
How to Use Growth Rate Calculator
Use the calculator to compare any two numerical values and determine the size and direction of the change.
- Enter the initial value — Enter the starting value before the change occurred.
- Enter the final value — Enter the later or ending value you want to compare with the initial value.
- Enter the number of years — Enter the length of the comparison period if you want an annualised growth rate. Use 1 for a one-year period.
- Calculate the result — Select Calculate Growth Rate to see the growth rate, absolute change, percentage change and annualised rate.
How to Calculate Growth Rate
The standard growth rate formula compares the difference between a final value and an initial value with the initial value. The formula is: ((Final Value − Initial Value) ÷ Initial Value) × 100. The resulting percentage shows how much the final value has changed relative to the starting point.
For example, if a business increases its annual revenue from £100,000 to £125,000, the absolute increase is £25,000. Dividing £25,000 by £100,000 gives 0.25, which becomes 25% when multiplied by 100. The business therefore experienced a 25% growth rate over the period measured.
Positive and Negative Growth Rates
A positive growth rate means the final value is greater than the initial value. A negative growth rate means the final value is lower. For example, a change from 500 to 600 produces a 20% growth rate, while a change from 500 to 400 produces a -20% growth rate. A result of 0% means the two values are identical.
Understanding Annualised Growth
When a measurement covers several years, an annualised growth rate can make the result easier to interpret as a yearly equivalent. For positive starting and ending values, the calculator uses the compound annual growth rate approach: ((Final Value ÷ Initial Value)^(1 ÷ Years) − 1) × 100. This accounts for compounding rather than simply dividing the total percentage change by the number of years.
Growth Rate Calculation Information
The standard growth rate calculation requires a non-zero initial value because the initial value is used as the denominator. If the initial value is zero, a conventional percentage growth rate is undefined and the calculator will ask you to provide a different starting value.
For meaningful comparisons, make sure the initial and final values represent the same metric and use consistent units, definitions and measurement periods. When comparing business results, for example, revenue should be compared with revenue rather than revenue with profit. The annualised calculation is intended for positive initial and final values; comparisons involving zero or negative values require additional interpretation and may not have a meaningful compound annual growth rate.
