How Do You Convert an Hourly Rate to an Annual Salary?
The basic formula for converting an hourly rate to an annual salary is to multiply the hourly rate by the number of hours worked each week and then multiply that figure by the number of paid weeks in the year. Using a standard 52-week calculation, the formula is: hourly rate × hours per week × 52.
For example, someone earning £20 per hour and working 37.5 hours per week would have an estimated gross annual salary of £39,000. The calculation is £20 × 37.5 × 52 = £39,000. This figure represents gross pay before deductions such as Income Tax and National Insurance.
Hourly Rate to Annual Salary Formula
The standard formula is annual salary = hourly rate × hours per week × 52. At £15 per hour and 37.5 hours per week, the estimated annual salary is £29,250. At £20 per hour and 37.5 hours per week, it is £39,000. At £25 per hour and 40 hours per week, it is £52,000.
Does Paid Holiday Affect the Annual Salary Calculation?
If an employee receives paid holiday, the standard annual salary calculation generally continues to use 52 paid weeks because holiday is included in the employee's paid annual income. However, comparing salary against only the hours actually worked can produce a different effective hourly figure because paid holiday reduces the number of working weeks.
Hourly Rate to Annual Salary Calculator Assumptions
This calculator provides a gross salary estimate rather than a calculation of take-home pay. It assumes that the hourly rate remains unchanged throughout the year and that the specified weekly working hours remain consistent.
The standard calculation uses 52 weeks per year. The default weekly working pattern is 37.5 hours. The paid holiday figure is provided for the optional effective-rate comparison and does not alter the standard annual salary result.
The results do not account for overtime, unpaid breaks, bonuses, commission, shift premiums, irregular working hours, unpaid leave, Income Tax, National Insurance, pension contributions, student loan repayments or other deductions. Actual earnings can therefore differ from the estimate.
