What Is an Income Tax Calculator?
An Income Tax calculator estimates how much Income Tax you may have to pay on your annual income. In the UK, Income Tax is generally calculated by applying different tax rates to different portions of taxable income after applicable allowances have been taken into account.
This free UK Income Tax calculator uses the 2026/27 tax rates and allowances to provide an estimate for taxpayers in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland. Because Scotland has its own Income Tax bands and rates, selecting the correct taxpayer location is important.
Why Use an Income Tax Calculator?
Working out Income Tax manually can be difficult because your income may be divided across several tax bands. This calculator applies the relevant rates to each portion of taxable income and provides a clear breakdown of the estimated result.

How Is Income Tax Calculated in the UK?
UK Income Tax is calculated on taxable income after applicable allowances have been deducted. For most taxpayers with standard circumstances, the Personal Allowance means the first £12,570 of income is normally tax-free. Income above the Personal Allowance is then divided between the applicable Income Tax bands.
For 2026/27, taxpayers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland generally pay 20% basic-rate tax on taxable income up to £37,700, 40% higher-rate tax on taxable income from £37,701 to £125,140, and 45% additional-rate tax on taxable income above £125,140.
2026/27 Income Tax Rates in England, Wales and Northern Ireland
The standard Personal Allowance is £12,570. After the allowance, the basic rate is 20% on the first £37,700 of taxable income. The higher rate is 40% on taxable income above £37,700 up to £125,140, while the additional rate is 45% on taxable income above £125,140.
2026/27 Scottish Income Tax Rates
Scotland has separate Income Tax bands for most non-savings and non-dividend income. For 2026/27, the Scottish rates include a 19% starter rate, 20% basic rate, 21% intermediate rate, 42% higher rate, 45% advanced rate and 48% top rate. The bands are applied to taxable income after the Personal Allowance.
Income Tax Calculator Limitations
This calculator is intended to provide a straightforward estimate of Income Tax on ordinary annual income. It uses the standard Personal Allowance and the published 2026/27 tax bands for England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland.
The calculation does not account for every possible tax relief, allowance or source of income. It does not calculate National Insurance, pension contributions, student loan repayments, dividend tax, savings tax, Capital Gains Tax, benefits in kind, salary sacrifice arrangements or other payroll adjustments.
The Personal Allowance is reduced by £1 for every £2 of adjusted net income above £100,000 and can be reduced to zero. This calculator applies that standard taper based on the income entered, but actual adjusted net income can differ from gross salary because of factors such as pension contributions and certain tax reliefs.
