Insulation Calculator

Enter the dimensions of the areas you want to insulate, subtract openings, choose the insulation thickness and add a waste allowance to estimate your insulation requirements.

1. Enter the Area to Insulate

Enter dimensions in metres. Leave any unused surface at zero.

For multiple walls, enter their combined length.
Measure the height of the wall area being insulated.
Leave at zero if the ceiling is not being insulated.
Enter the ceiling's other dimension.
Enter the floor length if floor insulation is required.
Enter the floor's other dimension.

2. Doors, Windows & Other Openings

Add wall openings that should be deducted from the insulation area.

3. Insulation Specification

Choose the insulation thickness and the allowance for cutting and installation waste.

Important: The calculator estimates the physical quantity of insulation based on area and thickness. It does not determine the required thermal performance or legally required insulation specification for a particular building.

Your Insulation Estimate

Wall area 0 m²
Opening area 0 m²
Ceiling area 0 m²
Floor area 0 m²
Net insulation area 0 m²
Area including waste 0 m²
Insulation thickness 0 mm
Estimated insulation volume 0 m³

This is an area and volume estimate. Actual material quantities can vary according to product dimensions, packaging, installation method, cutting requirements, framing and the geometry of the building.

What Is an Insulation Calculator?

An insulation calculator is a tool that estimates how much insulation may be required to cover a defined area. It can calculate the surface area of walls, ceilings and floors and convert that area into an approximate insulation volume using the selected insulation thickness.

This can help when planning insulation work, estimating material quantities and preparing for a renovation or construction project. The calculator can also deduct doors, windows and other openings from wall areas and apply a waste allowance for cutting and installation.

Why Use an Insulation Calculator?

Insulation quantities can be estimated quickly by calculating the area that needs to be covered and multiplying it by the intended insulation thickness. This calculator brings those calculations together and provides an easy way to estimate the physical quantity of insulation required.

1

Calculate Wall Area

Calculate the total wall area from the combined wall length and height.

2

Include Ceilings

Add ceiling dimensions to include loft, roof-space or ceiling insulation areas.

3

Include Floors

Calculate the area of rectangular floors that require insulation.

4

Deduct Openings

Subtract doors, windows and other openings from the wall area.

5

Calculate Volume

Calculate approximate insulation volume using the selected insulation thickness.

6

Add Waste

Apply a configurable allowance to account for cutting and material waste.

How to Use the Insulation Calculator

Enter the dimensions of each surface that needs insulation, add any wall openings and select the insulation thickness. The calculator will then provide the estimated insulation area and volume.

  1. Enter the wall dimensions — Enter the combined wall length and height in metres.
  2. Enter ceiling and floor dimensions — Add the length and width of any ceilings or floors that require insulation.
  3. Add openings — Enter the width and height of doors, windows and other wall openings to deduct them from the wall area.
  4. Select thickness and waste — Choose the insulation thickness and waste allowance, then select Calculate Insulation.

How to Calculate How Much Insulation You Need

The first step in estimating insulation is to calculate the total surface area that needs to be covered. For a rectangular wall, multiply the wall length by its height. For a rectangular ceiling or floor, multiply the length by the width. When multiple surfaces are involved, their areas can be combined.

For wall areas, doors and windows should be deducted where appropriate because these openings do not require insulation over their full dimensions. Once the net area has been established, a waste allowance can be applied to provide an additional quantity for cutting and fitting.

Calculating Insulation Volume

Insulation volume is calculated by multiplying the area being insulated by the insulation thickness expressed in metres. For example, an adjusted insulation area of 50 m² with a thickness of 100 mm has an estimated volume of 5 m³ because 100 mm is equal to 0.1 metres.

Choosing an Insulation Thickness

The appropriate insulation thickness depends on the building element, insulation material, required thermal performance, construction method and applicable building requirements. A thicker product does not automatically mean that it is the correct choice for every application. Always follow the relevant project specification and manufacturer instructions.

Insulation Calculation Formula

For a rectangular wall, the basic formula is wall area = wall length × wall height. For a rectangular ceiling or floor, the formula is area = length × width. The area of doors, windows and other wall openings is then subtracted from the total wall area.

The net insulation area is multiplied by the selected waste factor to calculate the adjusted area. For example, applying a 10% allowance means multiplying the net area by 1.10.

The estimated insulation volume is calculated using the adjusted area multiplied by insulation thickness in metres. Therefore, an adjusted area of 100 m² with 150 mm insulation has an estimated volume of 15 m³.

The calculated volume is useful for estimating the physical amount of insulation required, but it does not necessarily correspond directly to the number of rolls, slabs, batts, boards or bags that need to be purchased. Product dimensions and packaging vary between manufacturers, so the manufacturer's stated coverage should be checked when purchasing materials.

Frequently Asked Questions

The calculator determines the surface area that needs to be insulated, subtracts the area of wall openings, adds the selected waste allowance and calculates the estimated insulation volume using the selected thickness.
The quantity depends on the total area, insulation thickness, openings and waste allowance. Use the calculator to estimate the required coverage area and insulation volume, then check the manufacturer's product coverage to determine the number of packs or rolls required.
Yes. The calculator supports walls, ceilings and floors. You can use any combination of these surfaces by entering dimensions only for the areas that need to be insulated.
A waste allowance can be useful because insulation often needs to be cut around corners, openings, framing, services and irregular areas. The appropriate allowance depends on the shape of the area and the insulation product being installed.
Insulation volume is the approximate three-dimensional volume occupied by the insulation. It is calculated by multiplying the adjusted insulation area by the insulation thickness expressed in metres.
No. This calculator estimates the quantity of insulation based on the dimensions and thickness you enter. The appropriate insulation material, thermal performance and required thickness should be determined from the building specification, applicable requirements and manufacturer guidance.
