Estimated Journey Cost

Based on the information entered, the estimated cost of your journey is:

Estimated total journey cost £0.00
Estimated energy cost £0.00
Cost per mile £0.00
Cost per passenger £0.00
Total distance 0 miles
Cost category Estimated cost
Fuel £0.00
Tolls £0.00

What Is a Journey Cost Calculator?

A journey cost calculator estimates how much a particular car trip is likely to cost based on the distance travelled, vehicle efficiency and current fuel or electricity prices. It can also account for additional direct journey expenses such as tolls and parking.

This is useful when planning a road trip, comparing driving routes, estimating commuting expenses or working out how much a shared car journey costs per passenger. By entering realistic figures for your own vehicle, you can create a more useful estimate than relying on a generic average.

Why Use Journey Cost Calculator?

The cost of a journey depends on more than its distance. Fuel economy, electricity prices, tolls, parking and the number of people travelling can all affect the amount you actually spend on a trip.

1

Fuel Cost Calculation

Estimate the fuel required for a journey using annual-style UK MPG measurements and the price per litre.

2

Electric Vehicle Support

Calculate EV journey energy costs using miles per kWh and the electricity price used for charging.

3

Return Journey Calculation

Include the return trip automatically by doubling the one-way distance entered into the calculator.

4

Tolls and Parking

Add tolls, parking charges and other direct journey expenses to produce a more complete trip estimate.

5

Cost Per Passenger

Enter the number of passengers to see what the total journey cost would be per person if divided equally.

6

Cost Per Mile

See the estimated cost of the complete journey for every mile travelled.

How to Use Journey Cost Calculator

Enter the details that best represent your planned journey and vehicle. The calculator will then estimate the energy required and combine it with any additional journey costs.

  1. Enter the journey distance — Enter the one-way distance in miles and select the return journey option if you are travelling back to your starting point.
  2. Enter your vehicle information — Choose a fuel-powered or electric vehicle and provide its typical fuel economy or electrical efficiency and current energy price.
  3. Add additional costs — Enter tolls, parking and any other direct costs associated with the journey.
  4. Calculate the journey cost — Select “Calculate Journey Cost” to see the total estimated cost, energy cost, cost per mile and equal cost per passenger.

How Much Does a Car Journey Cost?

The cost of a car journey depends on the distance travelled and the expenses associated with making that trip. Fuel or electricity is usually one of the most noticeable costs, but tolls and parking can substantially increase the total for some routes. A longer journey does not necessarily have the same cost per mile as a shorter journey because fixed charges can have a greater effect on shorter trips.

Using your own vehicle's real-world efficiency and the price you actually pay for fuel or electricity can make a journey cost estimate more useful. The same route can cost different amounts for different vehicles, and the cost can also change when energy prices or driving conditions change.

How Journey Fuel Costs Are Calculated

For petrol, diesel and hybrid vehicles, the calculator divides the total journey distance by the vehicle's UK MPG figure to estimate the number of imperial gallons required. This is converted into litres using 4.54609 litres per UK gallon, and the estimated litres are multiplied by the fuel price per litre to produce the estimated fuel cost.

For electric vehicles, the total distance is divided by the vehicle's miles-per-kWh efficiency to estimate the electricity required. That figure is multiplied by the electricity price per kWh. This provides an estimate based on the charging price entered rather than a fixed public or home charging rate.

What Can Increase the Cost of a Journey?

Traffic, frequent acceleration, high speeds, hills, cold weather, heavy loads and short journeys can all affect real-world energy consumption. Fuel prices and electricity tariffs can also change the amount paid for the same distance. Public EV charging can have different pricing structures from home charging, so using a realistic charging price is important when estimating an electric journey.

Tolls and parking are separate costs and can be particularly important when comparing alternative routes. Entering these charges allows the calculator to include them in the total rather than considering only the vehicle's fuel or electricity consumption.

Journey Cost Calculator Accuracy and Limitations

This calculator provides an estimate rather than an exact prediction of what your journey will cost. Fuel economy and electric efficiency figures can differ from real-world consumption, while traffic, weather, driving style, vehicle load and route conditions can all affect energy use. Energy prices may also change between the time you make the calculation and the time you travel.

The calculation focuses on direct journey expenses. It does not automatically include depreciation, finance payments, insurance, servicing, tyres, general maintenance or other broader vehicle ownership costs. If you want to understand the complete cost of operating a vehicle, those expenses should be considered separately using an appropriate ownership or running-cost calculation.

The cost per passenger shown by this calculator assumes the total journey cost is divided equally between the number of people entered. It does not determine how passengers should actually split the cost or account for different starting points, drop-offs or individual contributions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A journey cost calculator estimates how much a particular car trip is likely to cost. It can use journey distance, fuel economy or electric vehicle efficiency, energy prices and additional costs such as tolls and parking.
For a fuel-powered vehicle, estimated fuel consumption is calculated from the journey distance and the vehicle's UK miles-per-gallon figure. The estimated gallons are converted to litres and multiplied by the fuel price per litre.
Yes. Enable the return journey option and the calculator will double the one-way distance before calculating the energy and distance-related journey cost.
Yes. You can enter the total toll and parking costs for the journey, including costs that apply to a return trip.
Yes. Enter the number of people travelling and the calculator will divide the estimated total journey cost by the number of passengers to show an equal cost per person.
No. The results are estimates based on the figures entered. Actual costs can vary because of traffic, driving style, vehicle load, weather, fuel or electricity prices, charging losses and other conditions.
