What Is a Leap Year Calculator?

A Leap Year Calculator is an online tool that determines whether a particular year is a leap year. Unlike a standard year, which contains 365 days, a leap year contains 366 days because an additional day, 29 February, is added to the calendar.

This calculator provides a quick way to check any year without having to work through the leap year rules manually. It can be useful when checking dates, planning calendars, calculating time periods, working with historical or future dates, or verifying calendar information.

Why Use the Leap Year Calculator?

The calculator applies the standard Gregorian calendar leap year rules to give you a clear result immediately. It also provides additional information about the selected year so you can understand exactly what the result means.

How to Use the Leap Year Calculator

Checking a year is quick and requires only the year you want to examine.

  1. Enter a year — Type the four-digit year, or another valid whole year from 1 to 9999, into the input field.
  2. Check the year — Select the “Check Year” button to apply the leap year rules.
  3. Review the result — The calculator tells you whether the year is a leap year, how many days it contains and how many days February has.
  4. Check another year — Enter another year and calculate again, or use “Use Current Year” and “Reset” to quickly change the input.

How to Calculate Whether a Year Is a Leap Year

The Gregorian calendar uses a specific set of rules to determine leap years. A year is a leap year when it is evenly divisible by 4. However, there is an exception for century years: a year that is divisible by 100 is not a leap year unless it is also divisible by 400.

For example, 2024 is a leap year because it is divisible by 4 and is not a century year. The year 1900 was not a leap year because, although it is divisible by 4 and 100, it is not divisible by 400. In contrast, 2000 was a leap year because it is divisible by 400.

Leap Year Rules Explained

There are three simple checks behind the standard leap year calculation. If a year is not divisible by 4, it is not a leap year. If it is divisible by 4 but not by 100, it is a leap year. If it is divisible by 100, it must also be divisible by 400 to qualify as a leap year.

Why February Has 29 Days in a Leap Year

The additional day in a leap year is placed at the end of February, making February 29 days long instead of 28. This extra day helps keep the calendar aligned with the length of Earth's orbit around the Sun, which is slightly longer than 365 days.

Understanding Leap Year Results

A standard year contains 365 days, while a leap year contains 366 days. The additional day is always 29 February. Because a leap year has one more day than a standard year, dates after February can fall on different days of the week compared with the equivalent dates in a non-leap year.

The calculator uses the Gregorian calendar leap year rules. These rules are the internationally established basis for the modern civil calendar used in most countries. The calculation is mathematical and does not depend on your location, time zone or device settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

A leap year is a year containing 366 days instead of the usual 365 days. The additional day is 29 February.
A year is normally a leap year if it is evenly divisible by 4. However, century years must also be evenly divisible by 400 to be leap years. This means 2000 was a leap year, while 1900 was not.
A leap year contains 366 days. A standard non-leap year contains 365 days.
Leap years keep the calendar better aligned with Earth's approximately 365.2422-day orbit around the Sun. Without the extra day, the calendar would gradually drift relative to the seasons.
No. Years divisible by 4 are generally leap years, but century years such as 1700, 1800 and 1900 are not leap years unless they are also divisible by 400. Therefore, 2000 was a leap year.
