What Is a Letter Counter?

A letter counter is an online text analysis tool that counts alphabetic letters within a piece of text. Unlike a standard character counter, which can include spaces, numbers and punctuation, a letter counter focuses specifically on letters.

The YesTools Letter Counter also separates uppercase and lowercase letters and provides additional counts for digits, punctuation and other characters. This makes it useful when you need a detailed breakdown of the contents of your text.

Count Letters Online

A letter count measures the number of alphabetic characters in a piece of text. Unlike a general character count, it does not treat spaces, numbers or punctuation as letters. This makes letter counting useful when a task specifically asks for the number of letters rather than the total number of characters.

For example, the text "Hello, World! 123" contains ten letters: five letters in "Hello" and five letters in "World". The comma, exclamation mark, space and numbers are not included in the total letter count.

Letter Count vs Character Count

Letter count and character count are related but different measurements. A character count can include letters, numbers, punctuation, spaces and other characters, depending on how the counter is configured. A letter count specifically focuses on alphabetic characters. If you need the total number of characters in your text, a character counter is more appropriate.

Uppercase and Lowercase Letter Counts

Separating uppercase and lowercase letters can provide additional information about how text is formatted. The Letter Counter reports both values alongside the overall number of letters, making it easy to analyse capitalisation without manually inspecting the text.

How Letter Counting Works

The tool examines each character in the text and determines whether it is a Unicode letter. Letters are included in the total letter count, while digits, punctuation, spaces and other non-letter characters are reported separately.

Uppercase and lowercase letters are also identified separately where Unicode provides case information. This means the tool can handle many accented and non-English letters rather than being restricted to the basic English alphabet.
