Median Calculator
Calculate the median of a set of numbers quickly and accurately, with the count, minimum and maximum shown alongside the result.
Median Calculator
Enter your numbers below, choose the number of decimal places and calculate the median.
What Is a Median Calculator?
A median calculator finds the middle value in a set of numbers after the values have been arranged from smallest to largest. When a dataset contains an even number of values, the median is calculated by finding the average of the two middle values.
A median calculator is useful for quickly analysing numerical datasets such as test scores, measurements, prices, ratings and other results where the central value provides a useful indication of the dataset.
Why Use Median Calculator?
This free median calculator automatically sorts your values and calculates the middle value, while also showing useful information about the dataset.
Accurate Median
Calculate the correct middle value of an ordered numerical dataset.
Flexible Number Input
Enter values using commas, spaces or separate lines for convenient data entry.
Decimal Support
Use whole numbers or decimal values when calculating the median.
Negative Values
Positive and negative numbers can be included in the same dataset.
Dataset Statistics
See the number of values, minimum and maximum alongside the median.
Adjustable Precision
Choose between 0 and 10 decimal places for the displayed results.
How to Use Median Calculator
Enter your dataset into the calculator and it will automatically arrange the values and determine the median.
- Enter Numbers — Type or paste your numbers separated by commas, spaces or line breaks.
- Choose Precision — Select how many decimal places should be displayed, from 0 to 10.
- Calculate Median — Click Calculate Median to process the values.
- Review Results — View the median, count, minimum and maximum for your dataset.
How to Calculate the Median
To calculate the median, first arrange all values in ascending order from the smallest to the largest. If the dataset contains an odd number of values, the median is the single value positioned in the centre. If the dataset contains an even number of values, the median is the arithmetic mean of the two values in the centre.
For example, the dataset 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 has five values, so the middle value is 30 and the median is 30. For 10, 20, 30 and 40, there are two middle values, 20 and 30, so the median is (20 + 30) ÷ 2 = 25.
What Is the Median?
The median is a measure of central tendency that identifies the middle position of an ordered dataset. Unlike the arithmetic mean, the median is generally less influenced by extremely high or low values, making it particularly useful for datasets that contain outliers.
Median Formula
For an odd number of values, the median is the value at the middle position after sorting. For an even number of values, the median is calculated by adding the two middle values together and dividing their sum by two.
Understanding Median Calculator Results
The median represents the central position of the sorted dataset. The count shows how many values were entered, while the minimum and maximum identify the smallest and largest values respectively.
Decimal and negative values are supported, and results are rounded to the number of decimal places you select. All calculations are performed directly in your browser, so the numbers entered into this calculator are not sent to a server by the tool.
