Momentum Calculator
Choose the quantity you want to calculate, enter the known values, select their units, and calculate the result.
What Is a Momentum Calculator?
A momentum calculator is a tool for calculating the linear momentum of a moving object from its mass and velocity. Momentum is a measure of an object's motion and is calculated using the equation p = mv, where p represents momentum, m represents mass and v represents velocity.
This calculator can also rearrange the momentum equation to solve for mass or velocity when the other quantities are known. It is useful for physics students, teachers, engineers and anyone working with calculations involving moving objects, collisions and conservation of momentum.
Why Use Momentum Calculator?
This free online momentum calculator provides a quick way to perform the standard linear momentum calculation while automatically converting common measurement units into a consistent system.
Calculate Momentum
Calculate an object's momentum from its mass and velocity using p = mv.
Solve for Mass
Find mass when momentum and velocity are known.
Calculate Velocity
Determine velocity from a known momentum and mass.
Multiple Units
Use common mass, velocity and momentum units without manually converting each value first.
Automatic Conversion
Input values are converted internally to compatible SI units before the calculation is performed.
Free and Browser-Based
Perform momentum calculations directly in your browser without installing software or creating an account.
How to Use Momentum Calculator
Select the quantity you want to calculate and enter the other known values. The calculator handles the unit conversions and displays the result together with the equation used.
- Choose the quantity — Select Momentum, Mass or Velocity from the calculation menu.
- Enter the known values — Enter the mass and velocity, or provide momentum and one of the other required quantities.
- Select the units — Choose the correct unit for each value. The calculator automatically converts the measurements before calculating.
- Calculate the result — Select Calculate to display the result and the calculation details.
Momentum Formula and Equation
The standard equation for linear momentum is p = mv. Here, p is momentum, m is the object's mass and v is its velocity. In SI units, mass is measured in kilograms and velocity in metres per second, so momentum is expressed in kilogram metres per second (kg·m/s).
The momentum equation can be rearranged to find either of the other variables. If momentum and velocity are known, mass is calculated using m = p ÷ v. If momentum and mass are known, velocity is calculated using v = p ÷ m.
How to Calculate Momentum
To calculate momentum, first convert the mass to kilograms and velocity to metres per second if you are using SI units. Multiply the mass by the velocity. For example, an object with a mass of 2 kg travelling at 10 m/s has a momentum of 20 kg·m/s because 2 × 10 = 20.
Momentum, Mass and Velocity
Momentum is directly proportional to both mass and velocity. If velocity doubles while mass remains constant, momentum doubles. Likewise, doubling mass while keeping velocity constant doubles momentum. Because velocity has direction, momentum is a vector quantity and its direction is the same as the object's velocity.
Momentum Calculator Accuracy and Limitations
The calculator uses defined conversion factors for the supported mass, velocity and momentum units. Results are calculated from the numerical values entered, so the precision of the result depends on the precision and accuracy of the original measurements.
This calculator uses the classical linear momentum equation p = mv and treats velocity as a signed quantity. A positive or negative velocity can therefore produce momentum in the corresponding direction. The calculation does not account for relativistic effects, rotational momentum or other more advanced forms of momentum.
