Months Between Dates Calculator
Calculate the number of complete calendar months between two dates, see any remaining days, and optionally include both dates with this free online Months Between Dates Calculator.
Months Between Dates Calculator
Enter a start date and end date, choose whether to include both dates, and select Calculate.
Complete months are calendar months rather than fixed 30-day periods. The remaining days are calculated after complete calendar months have been accounted for.
What Is a Months Between Dates Calculator?
A Months Between Dates Calculator determines how many complete calendar months separate two dates. Because calendar months have different lengths, calculating the number of months between dates is not as simple as dividing a number of days by 30. This calculator uses the actual calendar dates and also identifies any remaining days.
This tool is useful for calculating periods between important dates, checking project schedules, comparing billing or subscription periods, planning events, reviewing contract periods and working out how long has passed between two points in time.
Why Use the Months Between Dates Calculator?
Manually calculating calendar months can be confusing because months contain different numbers of days and leap years can change the length of February. This calculator handles those calendar differences automatically and presents the result in a clear format.
Calendar-Based Calculation
Calculates complete months using the actual calendar dates instead of assuming every month contains the same number of days.
Instant Results
Results are calculated immediately in your browser without requiring an account, installation or external software.
Remaining Days
See complete calendar months together with the number of days left after those complete months.
Inclusive Counting
Optionally count both the starting and ending dates when you need to consider the entire calendar range.
Any Date Order
Enter the dates in either order. The calculator identifies the earlier date and calculates the absolute calendar difference.
Leap Year Support
Leap years and February 29 are handled as part of the actual calendar calculation.
How to Use the Months Between Dates Calculator
Enter the two calendar dates you want to compare, select your preferred counting option and calculate the result.
- Select the start date — Choose the first date in the period you want to calculate.
- Select the end date — Choose the second date. It can be earlier or later than the start date.
- Choose inclusive counting if required — Enable this option when both the start and end dates should be included in the calendar range.
- Calculate the result — Select Calculate to see complete months, remaining days, inclusive days and the direction of the date range.
How to Calculate the Number of Months Between Two Dates
To calculate complete months between two dates, compare the year, month and day of the earlier date with the later date. A complete month is counted when moving from the starting calendar day to the corresponding day in a later month. If the ending date falls before the corresponding day, the final partial month is represented as remaining days instead.
For example, from 15 January to 15 April is exactly 3 complete calendar months. From 15 January to 20 April is 3 complete months and 5 additional days. This calendar-based approach is more meaningful than simply dividing the total number of days by 30 because calendar months do not all have 30 days.
Why Calendar Months Are Not Always the Same Length
Calendar months contain different numbers of days. January, March, May, July, August, October and December have 31 days, while April, June, September and November have 30. February normally has 28 days and has 29 days during a leap year. As a result, a month should not automatically be treated as a fixed number of days when calculating calendar periods.
Complete Months and Remaining Days
A result such as 5 months and 12 days means that five complete calendar months fit within the selected date range, followed by another 12 days. This format provides more useful calendar information than a decimal value such as 5.4 months, because the length of a calendar month varies depending on which months are involved.
Understanding Months Between Dates Results
The calculator reports complete calendar months and any remaining days. It does not assume that every month contains 30 days. This distinction is important for dates near the end of a month, across February, and for ranges spanning leap years.
When the inclusive option is enabled, both the start and end dates are considered part of the calendar range. Inclusive counting is useful when you are counting the number of calendar days covered by a period rather than measuring the elapsed interval between two dates.
