Mulch Calculator
Calculate how much mulch you need for a garden bed, landscaping area or other outdoor project in cubic feet, cubic yards and bags.
Mulch Calculator
Enter the area dimensions, mulch depth and optional bag size to calculate the amount of mulch required.
Your Mulch Requirement
The bag estimate is rounded up to the nearest whole bag. Consider allowing a small amount of extra mulch for uneven ground, settling and future touch-ups.
What Is a Mulch Calculator?
A mulch calculator is a tool that estimates the volume of mulch required to cover a defined area at a specified depth. It can help homeowners, gardeners, landscapers and contractors determine how much material to purchase before starting a landscaping project.
This free mulch calculator uses the length and width of the area together with the desired mulch depth to calculate the required volume. The result is provided in cubic feet and cubic yards, along with an optional estimate of the number of mulch bags needed.
Why Use a Mulch Calculator?
Calculating the required mulch volume before purchasing materials can help reduce waste and make it easier to estimate the quantity needed for a project.
Calculate Volume
Calculate the amount of mulch required from the area dimensions and desired depth.
Cubic Yard Results
Convert the required volume into cubic yards, a common measurement for bulk landscaping materials.
Bag Estimates
Select a bag size to estimate how many individual bags of mulch you need.
Custom Depth
Enter the exact mulch depth required for your particular garden or landscaping application.
Instant Results
Results are calculated immediately in your browser without uploading your measurements.
Free to Use
Use the mulch calculator without registration, payment or software installation.
How to Use the Mulch Calculator
Measure the area you want to cover and enter the measurements into the calculator. For a rectangular area, use the longest dimension as the length and the other dimension as the width.
- Enter the length — Enter the length of the area in feet.
- Enter the width — Enter the width of the area in feet.
- Enter the mulch depth — Enter the desired mulch depth in inches.
- Choose the bag size — Select the volume printed on your mulch bag if you want an estimated bag quantity, then select Calculate Mulch.
How Much Mulch Do I Need?
The amount of mulch you need depends on the total surface area and the depth at which you want to apply the mulch. A larger area requires more material, while increasing the depth also increases the total volume required.
For a rectangular area, the basic calculation is area multiplied by mulch depth. Because the calculator accepts depth in inches, the depth is converted to feet before the volume is calculated. The volume in cubic feet is then divided by 27 to produce cubic yards.
Mulch Calculation Formula
The calculation used by this tool is: length × width × mulch depth in feet = cubic feet of mulch. To convert cubic feet to cubic yards, divide the cubic-foot result by 27.
Mulch Calculation Example
For example, an area measuring 20 feet by 10 feet has a surface area of 200 square feet. At a mulch depth of 3 inches, the required volume is 50 cubic feet, which is approximately 1.85 cubic yards. With 2-cubic-foot bags, this would require 25 bags when rounded up to a whole bag.
| Measurement | Example |
|---|---|
| Length | 20 ft |
| Width | 10 ft |
| Area | 200 sq ft |
| Depth | 3 in |
| Required mulch | 50 cu ft / approximately 1.85 cu yd |
Mulch Depth and Quantity Considerations
A mulch layer is commonly measured in inches. The appropriate depth depends on the material, the purpose of the mulch and the area being covered. A depth of around 2 to 4 inches is often used for garden and landscape applications, although requirements can vary.
The result produced by this calculator is an estimate based on the measurements supplied. Real-world quantities can vary because of irregularly shaped areas, uneven surfaces, product differences, settling and the way mulch is distributed. For large projects, it may be appropriate to allow a small additional quantity.
For irregularly shaped garden beds, divide the area into smaller rectangles or other measurable sections, calculate each section separately and add the results together. This can provide a more practical estimate than treating an irregular area as a single rectangle.
