Overtime Breakdown
What Is an Overtime Calculator?
An overtime calculator helps you work out how much additional gross pay you could earn from working hours beyond your normal schedule. It uses your standard hourly rate, overtime hours and the overtime multiplier to calculate the additional amount earned.
This can be useful for employees comparing overtime opportunities, checking payslip calculations, estimating additional weekly income or understanding how different overtime rates affect total earnings. The calculator can also show your regular pay and total gross pay for the week.
Why Use an Overtime Calculator?

How Is Overtime Pay Calculated in the UK?
Overtime pay is calculated by multiplying the number of overtime hours worked by the overtime hourly rate. Where overtime is paid at a premium, the normal hourly rate is multiplied by the relevant overtime multiplier first. For example, an employee earning £20 per hour at time and a half receives £30 for each overtime hour.
If that employee works 5 hours of overtime at 1.5 times their normal rate, the overtime pay would be £150. Their normal pay for a 37.5-hour week would be £750, giving total gross weekly earnings of £900 before deductions.
Overtime Pay Formula
The basic formula is overtime pay = overtime hours × normal hourly rate × overtime multiplier. For example, 10 overtime hours at £15 per hour and 1.5 times the normal rate would produce £225 in overtime pay: 10 × £15 × 1.5 = £225.
What Does Time and a Half Mean?
Time and a half means an overtime worker receives 1.5 times their normal hourly rate. If the normal rate is £20 per hour, the overtime rate at time and a half is £30 per hour. Double time means twice the normal hourly rate, so a £20 rate becomes £40 per overtime hour.
UK Overtime Calculator Assumptions
This calculator is designed to provide a straightforward gross overtime estimate. It assumes that your normal hourly rate remains unchanged and that all overtime hours entered are paid at the selected overtime multiplier.
There is no single overtime rate that applies to every UK worker. Your employment contract, workplace policy and circumstances determine whether overtime is available, how it is paid and whether additional conditions apply. The calculator therefore allows you to enter the rate that applies to you.
The results do not account for Income Tax, National Insurance, pension contributions, student loan repayments, bonuses, allowances, unpaid breaks or other deductions and adjustments. Actual take-home pay may therefore be lower than the gross figures shown.
