What Is a Pace Calculator?

A pace calculator is an online tool that determines how quickly you travelled over a given distance. Running and walking pace is normally expressed as the amount of time needed to cover one mile or one kilometre.

This free pace calculator uses your distance and elapsed time to calculate your average pace, equivalent pace and average speed. It can also estimate how long it would take you to complete several common running distances at the same pace.

Why Use the Pace Calculator?

Knowing your average pace can help you understand your performance, compare different activities and plan target times for future runs or walks.

1

Calculate Average Pace

Find your average time per kilometre or mile from your distance and elapsed time.

2

Convert Pace Units

See the equivalent pace in both minutes per kilometre and minutes per mile.

3

Calculate Speed

Calculate your average speed in kilometres per hour and miles per hour.

4

Estimate Finish Times

Estimate completion times for common race distances using your calculated pace.

5

Miles or Kilometres

Enter your distance in either miles or kilometres depending on the measurement you use.

6

Free and Instant

Calculate your pace directly in your browser without creating an account or installing software.

How to Use the Pace Calculator

Calculating your running or walking pace requires only the distance you travelled and the total time it took.

  1. Enter your distance — Enter the distance you covered and select kilometres or miles.
  2. Enter your elapsed time — Enter the hours, minutes and seconds for the activity.
  3. Calculate your pace — Select Calculate Pace to calculate your average pace and speed.
  4. Review the results — Use the calculated pace, speed and estimated finish times to assess your performance or plan future activities.

How to Calculate Running Pace

Running pace is calculated by dividing the total elapsed time by the distance travelled. For example, if you run 5 kilometres in 30 minutes, your average pace is 6 minutes per kilometre. The same activity is approximately 9 minutes 39 seconds per mile.

The pace calculation measures your overall average. It does not indicate whether your pace was consistent throughout the activity. Stops, hills, changes in speed and other factors can cause your actual pace at individual points during a run to differ from the overall average.

Pace Per Kilometre

Pace per kilometre expresses the time required to travel one kilometre. It is commonly used by runners and walkers who track their performance using metric distances. A lower number of minutes per kilometre represents a faster pace.

Pace Per Mile

Pace per mile expresses the time required to travel one mile. It is widely used for running and walking in countries and training programmes that use imperial distances. A lower minutes-per-mile figure indicates a faster pace.

Understanding Pace, Speed and Finish Times

Pace and speed describe the same movement from different perspectives. Pace tells you how much time is needed to cover a unit of distance, while speed tells you how much distance is covered within a unit of time. The calculator provides both measurements so you can use whichever format is most useful to you.

Estimated finish times are projections based on maintaining your calculated average pace. They are mathematical estimates rather than predictions of actual future performance. Fatigue, terrain, weather, fitness, elevation, stops and other conditions can affect the time required to complete a distance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Running pace is the amount of time required to cover a particular distance. It is commonly expressed as minutes per mile or minutes per kilometre. A faster pace has a lower time value.
Running pace is calculated by dividing total elapsed time by the distance travelled. For example, completing 5 kilometres in 30 minutes produces an average pace of 6 minutes per kilometre.
Yes. Select miles or kilometres when entering your distance. The calculator displays the average pace using your selected unit and also provides the equivalent pace in the other unit.
Yes. The calculator determines your average speed and displays it in both kilometres per hour and miles per hour.
Yes. After calculating your average pace, the calculator estimates completion times for 5K, 10K, half marathon and marathon distances, assuming the same pace is maintained.
Yes. The calculation is based on distance and elapsed time, so the tool can be used for running, walking, jogging and other activities where average pace is useful.
