What Is a Parallelogram Calculator?
A parallelogram calculator is an online geometry tool for calculating measurements associated with a parallelogram. Depending on the information available, it can calculate the area, perimeter, missing base, perpendicular height or side length.
The calculator is useful for students, teachers, engineers, designers and anyone who needs to solve a parallelogram measurement problem without performing the calculations manually.
Why Use the Parallelogram Calculator?
The calculator provides several common parallelogram calculations in one place and performs the mathematical operations automatically.
Calculate Area
Calculate the area from the base and perpendicular height using A = b × h.
Calculate Perimeter
Find the perimeter using the lengths of the two adjacent sides.
Find Missing Base
Calculate the base when the area and perpendicular height are known.
Find Missing Height
Calculate the perpendicular height when the area and base are known.
Find Missing Side
Calculate an unknown side length when the perimeter and other side are known.
Works With Any Unit
Enter measurements using any consistent unit, such as centimetres, metres, inches or feet.
How to Use the Parallelogram Calculator
Select the calculation you need and provide the required measurements. The calculator will validate the values and display the result.
- Choose a calculation — Select area, perimeter, missing base, missing height or missing side length.
- Enter the known measurements — Enter positive numerical values into the fields provided.
- Calculate the result — Select Calculate to perform the calculation.
- Review the result — The calculated value and relevant formula will be displayed in the results panel.
Parallelogram Area and Perimeter Formulas
A parallelogram has two pairs of parallel sides. Its area is found by multiplying the length of a chosen base by the perpendicular height associated with that base. The basic area formula is A = b × h.
The perimeter is calculated by adding all four side lengths. Because opposite sides of a parallelogram have equal lengths, the formula can be simplified to P = 2(a + b), where a and b represent the two adjacent side lengths.
Calculating a Missing Base or Height
If the area and perpendicular height are known, the missing base can be found by rearranging the area formula: b = A ÷ h. Similarly, if the area and base are known, the perpendicular height is h = A ÷ b.
Understanding Perpendicular Height
The height used to calculate the area of a parallelogram is the perpendicular distance between its parallel sides. It is not necessarily the length of the slanted side. Using the correct perpendicular height is essential for obtaining an accurate area.
Parallelogram Calculation Information
Use consistent units when entering measurements. For example, if the base and height are both entered in metres, the calculated area will be in square metres. If both are entered in centimetres, the area will be in square centimetres.
The calculator does not automatically convert between measurement units. For perimeter calculations, the result uses the same linear unit as the side measurements. For area calculations, the result is expressed in the corresponding squared unit.
Results are calculated directly in your browser using standard geometric formulas. No account or server-side calculation is required.
Parallelogram Formulas
- Area: A = b × h
- Perimeter: P = 2(a + b)
- Missing base: b = A ÷ h
- Missing height: h = A ÷ b
- Missing side: a = (P ÷ 2) − b
