What Is a Passphrase Generator?

A passphrase generator creates random phrases from multiple words to provide a longer alternative to traditional short passwords. By selecting words randomly rather than asking users to invent a phrase themselves, the generator can produce combinations that are difficult to predict.

Passphrases can be useful for account credentials, encryption keys where passphrases are supported, device access and other situations where a long, memorable credential is preferable. This free tool lets you control the number of words and the way those words are separated.

Why Use the Passphrase Generator?

A randomly generated passphrase can provide substantial length while remaining easier to read than a completely random string of characters. The tool provides several options for creating a passphrase that fits different requirements.

1

Random Word Selection

Words are selected randomly from the tool's built-in word list rather than assembled from predictable phrases.

2

Custom Word Count

Choose between 3 and 10 words to create a passphrase with the length appropriate for your use case.

3

Multiple Separators

Separate words with hyphens, spaces, underscores, periods or no separator depending on the requirements of the service.

4

Capitalisation Control

Optionally capitalise the first letter of each generated word to change the appearance of the passphrase.

5

Optional Number

Add a randomly selected number to the end of the passphrase when an account requires numeric characters.

6

Browser-Based Generation

Passphrases are generated directly in your browser without sending the generated result to an external password-generation service.

How to Use the Passphrase Generator

Generate a new random passphrase by selecting your preferred options and using the generator.

  1. Choose the number of words — Select between 3 and 10 words depending on the desired passphrase length.
  2. Select a separator — Choose a hyphen, space, underscore, period or no separator between words.
  3. Choose optional settings — Enable capitalisation or add a number if required by the service where you will use the passphrase.
  4. Generate and copy — Select “Generate Passphrase”, then use “Copy” to copy the resulting passphrase to your clipboard.

Generate a Secure Random Passphrase Online

A passphrase can combine the advantages of a long credential with words that are easier for people to read than a sequence of random characters. The important security properties are length, randomness and uniqueness. A phrase made from personally meaningful words or a familiar quotation should not be considered equivalent to a randomly generated passphrase.

This passphrase generator selects words independently from its built-in vocabulary. Increasing the number of words increases the number of possible combinations, which generally makes random guessing more difficult. The resulting phrase can then be stored in a password manager rather than memorised.

Why Random Passphrases Are Useful

People often create memorable passwords by combining familiar words, names, dates or predictable substitutions. Those patterns can reduce the effective unpredictability of a credential. Random word selection avoids deliberately chosen relationships between the words, making the resulting passphrase substantially less predictable.

Passphrase Length and Entropy

Entropy is a way of describing the number of possible outcomes available when a credential is generated randomly. For a word-based passphrase, the theoretical entropy depends on the size of the word list and the number of independent selections. The entropy displayed by this tool is therefore an estimate based on its available word list and selected word count, rather than a guarantee of how a particular system will evaluate the password.

Passphrase Generator Security and Limitations

The generator uses the browser's Web Crypto API through crypto.getRandomValues() when it is available. This provides a cryptographically secure source of random values for selecting words. The generated passphrase is processed within the page and is not submitted to a YesTools server.

The built-in word list is finite, so the displayed entropy is based on that specific list rather than every word that exists in a language. For sensitive accounts, use a sufficiently long unique passphrase and consider storing it in a reputable password manager. Some services also impose their own restrictions on spaces, symbols, numbers or maximum password length, so check the service's requirements before using a generated passphrase.

Frequently Asked Questions

A passphrase is a credential made from multiple words, usually selected in a way that makes the resulting phrase difficult to predict. Longer passphrases can provide substantial protection against guessing when the words are selected randomly.
Security depends on length, randomness and uniqueness rather than simply whether a credential is called a password or passphrase. A sufficiently long, randomly generated passphrase can be highly resistant to guessing.
There is no single word count that works for every situation. Using more randomly selected words increases the number of possible combinations and therefore generally increases resistance to guessing.
Yes. This tool uses the browser's cryptographically secure random number generator when available to select words from its built-in word list.
No. The passphrase is generated directly in your browser and this tool does not send the generated passphrase to a YesTools server.
Yes. A generated passphrase can be used as a password when the service accepts the characters and length used. Use a unique passphrase for each important account and store it in a secure password manager.
