How to Calculate a Percentage
There are several common ways to calculate percentages. To find a percentage of a number, convert the percentage to a decimal and multiply it by the number. For example, 15% of 200 is calculated as 0.15 × 200, which equals 30.
To find what percentage one number represents of another, divide the first number by the second number and multiply the result by 100. For example, 30 is 15% of 200 because (30 ÷ 200) × 100 = 15%.
Percentage Formula
The basic percentage formula is (Part ÷ Whole) × 100. This formula can be used to determine what percentage one value represents of another. When calculating a percentage of a number, the formula is (Percentage ÷ 100) × Number.
Percentage Increase and Decrease
Percentage change compares an original value with a new value. The formula is ((New Value − Original Value) ÷ Original Value) × 100. A positive result indicates an increase, while a negative result indicates a decrease.
Understanding Percentage Results
A percentage represents a proportion out of 100. For example, 25% means 25 out of every 100, while 50% represents one half of a whole. Percentages can be greater than 100% when the value being represented exceeds the reference amount.
When calculating percentage change, the original value is used as the reference point. Because it is used as the denominator, an original value of zero cannot be used for percentage change calculations. The calculator supports decimal values and performs calculations directly in your browser.
