Inches = Pixels ÷ DPI or PPI
What Is a Pixels to Inches Calculator?
A Pixels to Inches Calculator converts a digital pixel measurement into a physical measurement in inches using a specified DPI or PPI value. Because pixels describe digital dimensions while inches describe physical dimensions, a resolution value is needed to establish the relationship between them.
This calculator is useful when preparing images for printing, checking the physical dimensions of digital artwork, working with photographs, estimating display dimensions and converting image specifications between pixels and physical measurements.
Why Use the Pixels to Inches Calculator?
This free calculator performs pixel-to-inch conversions instantly and provides both single-dimension and image-dimension calculations. It also displays the equivalent measurements in centimetres and millimetres.

How to Use the Pixels to Inches Calculator
Choose the calculation method that matches what you need to measure, enter the pixel dimensions and provide the relevant DPI or PPI value.
- Choose a calculation method — Select Convert Pixels to Inches for a single dimension or Calculate Image Size to calculate both width and height.
- Enter the pixel dimensions — Enter the number of pixels you want to convert.
- Enter the DPI or PPI — Enter the pixels-per-inch value associated with the image, print setting or display.
- Calculate the result — Select Calculate to display the physical dimensions in inches, centimetres and millimetres.
How to Convert Pixels to Inches
The basic conversion from pixels to inches is straightforward when the DPI or PPI value is known. Divide the number of pixels by the number of pixels per inch. For example, an image dimension of 1200 pixels at 300 DPI corresponds to 4 inches because 1200 ÷ 300 = 4.
The same calculation can be applied to an image's width and height independently. A 2400 × 3000 pixel image at 300 DPI would therefore have a calculated physical size of 8 × 10 inches.
Pixels to Inches Formula
The standard formula is inches = pixels ÷ DPI. If PPI is being used instead of DPI, the equivalent formula is inches = pixels ÷ PPI. The important factor is that the pixels-per-inch value establishes how many pixels correspond to one physical inch.
Why DPI Matters When Converting Pixels
Pixels do not have a fixed physical size. The same 1200-pixel image could represent 12 inches at 100 DPI, 8 inches at 150 DPI, 4 inches at 300 DPI or 2 inches at 600 DPI. The pixel count stays the same in these examples, while the calculated physical size changes because the resolution value changes.
Understanding Pixels, Inches, DPI and PPI
Pixels are units of digital image or display dimensions, whereas inches are units of physical length. DPI means dots per inch and is traditionally associated with printing. PPI means pixels per inch and is more technically appropriate when describing digital display pixel density. In everyday image and printing workflows, DPI is frequently used when discussing the intended physical size of a pixel-based image.
Changing a resolution value does not automatically add or remove pixels from an image. If only the DPI metadata is changed, the pixel dimensions can remain exactly the same while the calculated physical dimensions change. Resampling an image is a separate operation that changes its actual pixel dimensions.
