What Is a Potential Energy Calculator?

A potential energy calculator is a tool for determining the gravitational potential energy associated with an object's mass and position in a gravitational field. Near the Earth's surface, gravitational potential energy can be calculated using the equation PE = mgh, where m represents mass, g represents gravitational acceleration and h represents height relative to a chosen reference level.

This calculator can also work backwards from the same relationship to find mass, height or gravitational acceleration when the other quantities are known. It is useful for physics and engineering calculations, classroom exercises, laboratory work and checking calculations involving gravitational energy.

How to Use Potential Energy Calculator

Choose the quantity you want to calculate and provide the other required values. The calculator converts the inputs to compatible units before applying the appropriate equation.

  1. Choose the quantity — Select Potential Energy, Mass, Height or Gravitational Acceleration from the calculation menu.
  2. Enter the known values — Enter the mass, height, gravitational acceleration or potential energy values required for the selected calculation.
  3. Select the units — Choose the appropriate unit for each value. The calculator automatically converts the measurements internally.
  4. Calculate the result — Select Calculate to display the result and the equation used for the calculation.

Potential Energy Formula: PE = mgh

The standard equation for gravitational potential energy near the Earth's surface is PE = mgh. In this equation, PE is gravitational potential energy measured in joules, m is mass measured in kilograms, g is gravitational acceleration measured in metres per second squared, and h is height measured in metres relative to a selected reference level.

The equation can be rearranged to calculate any one of its four quantities. Mass can be found using m = PE ÷ (g × h), height can be found using h = PE ÷ (m × g), and gravitational acceleration can be found using g = PE ÷ (m × h). These relationships are useful when analysing mechanical energy and gravitational motion.

What Does Gravitational Potential Energy Mean?

Gravitational potential energy is energy stored because of an object's position within a gravitational field. Near the surface of the Earth, raising an object increases its gravitational potential energy relative to the chosen reference level. If the object moves downward, that potential energy can be converted into other forms of energy, such as kinetic energy.

Potential Energy Units

The SI unit of energy is the joule (J). The calculator also supports kilojoules, foot-pounds force and calories for energy, along with kilograms, grams and pounds for mass; metres, centimetres, feet and inches for height; and metres per second squared or feet per second squared for gravitational acceleration. Unit conversions are performed before the calculation so the underlying equation remains dimensionally consistent.

Potential Energy Calculator Accuracy and Limitations

The calculator uses the standard gravitational acceleration of 9.80665 m/s² when the default Earth value is selected and uses defined conversion factors for the supported units. The displayed result is determined directly from the values entered and may therefore be affected by rounding or uncertainty in the original measurements.

The PE = mgh equation is the near-surface approximation for gravitational potential energy when gravitational acceleration can be treated as approximately constant. Height is measured relative to a chosen reference level, so changing that reference changes the numerical potential energy without changing the underlying physics. For situations involving large changes in altitude or significant variation in gravitational field strength, a more advanced gravitational potential model may be required.

The gravitational potential energy formula is PE = mgh, where PE is potential energy, m is mass, g is gravitational acceleration and h is height relative to a chosen reference level.
This calculator can calculate gravitational potential energy, mass, height or gravitational acceleration when the other three quantities are known.
The calculator supports kilograms, grams and pounds for mass; metres, centimetres, feet and inches for height; metres per second squared and feet per second squared for gravitational acceleration; and joules, kilojoules, foot-pounds force and calories for energy.
Gravitational potential energy is energy associated with an object's position in a gravitational field. Near Earth's surface, it can be calculated using PE = mgh.
The standard gravitational acceleration near Earth's surface is approximately 9.80665 m/s². The calculator uses this value when the Earth standard option is selected.
Yes. Gravitational potential energy depends on the reference level chosen for height. A negative result can therefore be meaningful when the object's position is below the selected reference level.
