What Is a Pregnancy Due Date Calculator?

A pregnancy due date calculator is an online tool that estimates when a baby may be expected to be born. The calculation uses a starting date associated with the pregnancy and applies a standard pregnancy length to produce an estimated due date.

This calculator allows you to estimate a due date using either the first day of your last menstrual period or a known conception date. It can be useful when you want a quick general estimate, but the result should not be treated as an exact prediction of the date of birth.

How Is a Pregnancy Due Date Calculated?

An estimated pregnancy due date is commonly calculated from the first day of the last menstrual period. A standard estimate of 280 days, or 40 weeks, is used from that date. This approach is based on the conventional assumption used for estimating pregnancy duration from the menstrual period.

When the conception date is known or can be reasonably estimated, an estimated 266 days, or approximately 38 weeks, can be counted from conception. Because the exact timing of ovulation, fertilisation and implantation can vary, a calculated due date should be regarded as an estimate rather than a fixed delivery date.

Due Date From Last Menstrual Period

The first day of the last menstrual period is a commonly used starting point for estimating a pregnancy due date. This calculator adds 280 days to the date entered when this method is selected. If the menstrual cycle differs substantially from the standard assumptions used by the calculation, the resulting estimate may not accurately reflect the actual timing of ovulation or conception.

Due Date From Conception Date

If a conception date is known or has been estimated with reasonable confidence, the calculator can instead use that date as its starting point. Approximately 266 days are added to the conception date. In practice, however, conception timing is not always known precisely, so the resulting date remains an estimate.

Understanding Your Estimated Due Date

A pregnancy due date represents an estimated point in time rather than a guarantee that labour will begin or that a baby will be born on that exact day. Only a relatively small proportion of babies are born precisely on their estimated due date, and normal pregnancy duration can vary.

The accuracy of an estimate depends partly on the accuracy of the starting date and the assumptions used by the calculation. Menstrual cycle length, ovulation timing and other individual factors can affect the relationship between the last menstrual period, conception and the actual stage of pregnancy. Healthcare professionals may use additional clinical information and ultrasound measurements when assessing or confirming an estimated due date.

If you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant, discuss your estimated due date and any questions about your pregnancy with a qualified healthcare professional. This online calculator is intended for general informational use and does not provide medical advice, diagnosis or treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A pregnancy due date calculator estimates the expected delivery date of a pregnancy using a starting date such as the first day of the last menstrual period or, where known, the conception date.
The calculator uses the selected starting date to estimate an expected due date. When the last menstrual period method is selected, the calculation uses a standard 280-day pregnancy estimate. When the conception date method is selected, it uses approximately 266 days from conception.
The first day of your last menstrual period is commonly used when that date is known. A known conception date can also be used, but conception is not always possible to identify precisely.
No. A calculated due date is an estimate rather than an exact prediction of when a baby will be born. Pregnancy length can vary, and your healthcare professional may adjust the estimated due date based on clinical information and ultrasound findings.
You can use the calculator to obtain a general estimate, but calculations based on the last menstrual period may be less representative when cycle length or ovulation timing differs from the standard assumptions. A healthcare professional can provide a more appropriate assessment.
You should discuss your estimated due date with your midwife, doctor or other qualified healthcare professional. They can assess your pregnancy and use clinical information, including ultrasound when appropriate, to establish or confirm an estimated due date.
