What Is a Pressure Calculator?

A pressure calculator is an online tool for determining the relationship between pressure, force and area. The basic pressure formula is pressure = force ÷ area. By rearranging this relationship, the same calculation can be used to determine force or area when the other two quantities are known.

This calculator is useful for engineering calculations, physics problems, mechanical applications, fluid systems, equipment specifications and everyday pressure conversions. It supports several common pressure, force and area units and automatically converts the values before performing the calculation.

Why Use a Pressure Calculator?

Calculating pressure manually can require several unit conversions when measurements are expressed in different systems. This calculator handles those conversions automatically so you can concentrate on the values and relationship being calculated.

1

Calculate Pressure

Calculate pressure from a known force and surface area using the standard pressure formula.

2

Calculate Force

Determine the force required when pressure and the affected area are known.

3

Calculate Area

Calculate the area when the applied force and pressure are known.

4

Multiple Pressure Units

Work with Pa, kPa, MPa, bar, psi, atm and mmHg without performing separate conversions.

5

Automatic Conversion

Force and area values are converted internally to compatible SI units before the calculation is performed.

6

Free and Browser-Based

Use the calculator directly in your browser without installing software or creating an account.

How to Use the Pressure Calculator

Select the quantity you want to calculate, provide the other two known measurements and choose the appropriate units.

  1. Choose what to calculate — Select Pressure, Force or Area from the calculation menu.
  2. Enter the known values — Enter the two measurements that are required for the selected calculation.
  3. Select the units — Choose the unit for each known measurement and select the unit you want for the result.
  4. Calculate the result — Select Calculate to display the result and review the equivalent pressure values where applicable.

Calculate Pressure, Force and Area

The fundamental pressure equation is pressure = force ÷ area. Pressure describes how much force is distributed over a given area. Using SI units, force is measured in newtons, area in square metres and pressure in pascals. One pascal is equal to one newton per square metre.

The equation can be rearranged depending on the quantity being calculated. To calculate force, use force = pressure × area. To calculate area, use area = force ÷ pressure. The calculator applies these relationships after converting the entered measurements into compatible units.

Pressure Units and Conversions

Common pressure units include pascals (Pa), kilopascals (kPa), megapascals (MPa), bar, pounds per square inch (psi), standard atmospheres (atm) and millimetres of mercury (mmHg). These units are commonly encountered in engineering, science, weather information, industrial equipment and tyre or pneumatic systems.

Using Different Force and Area Units

Force can be entered in newtons (N), kilonewtons (kN) or pounds-force (lbf). Area can be entered in square metres, square centimetres, square kilometres, square inches, square feet or square yards. The calculator converts these measurements internally, allowing compatible calculations even when different units are selected.

Pressure Calculation Accuracy

The calculator uses standard physical unit conversion factors and performs the calculations directly in your browser. Results are displayed with a practical number of significant decimal places to keep them readable while retaining useful precision.

Calculated values represent the mathematical relationship between pressure, force and area. They do not account for factors such as material deformation, temperature, measurement uncertainty, fluid behaviour, atmospheric conditions or equipment-specific characteristics. For technical or safety-critical applications, calculated results should be checked against the relevant specifications, measurements and engineering requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

A pressure calculator is a tool that calculates pressure from force and area, or rearranges the same relationship to calculate force or area. It can also convert the result between common pressure units.
Pressure is calculated by dividing force by area. The basic formula is pressure = force ÷ area. Force must be expressed in a compatible unit with the selected area measurement.
Yes. The calculator can determine pressure, force or area. Select the quantity you want to calculate, enter the other two known values and choose the appropriate units.
The calculator supports pascals (Pa), kilopascals (kPa), megapascals (MPa), bars, pounds per square inch (psi), standard atmospheres (atm) and millimetres of mercury (mmHg).
Psi means pounds per square inch, while bar is a metric pressure unit. One bar equals 100,000 pascals, while one psi is approximately 6,894.76 pascals.
The calculations use standard unit conversion factors and are performed using JavaScript in your browser. The displayed result is rounded for readability, while the calculation uses the underlying numeric value.
