Prime Number Calculator
Check whether a whole number is prime and identify its factors quickly and accurately with this free online prime number calculator.
Prime Number Calculator
Enter a whole number to determine whether it is prime and view its positive factors when applicable.
What Is a Prime Number Calculator?
A Prime Number Calculator checks whether a given whole number is a prime number. A prime number is an integer greater than 1 that can only be divided evenly by 1 and itself.
This tool is useful for students, teachers, programmers and anyone working with basic number theory who needs to quickly check a number for primality or inspect its factors.
Why Use Prime Number Calculator?
The calculator provides an immediate way to test whole numbers without manually checking every possible divisor.
Prime Number Testing
Quickly determine whether an entered whole number is prime or composite.
Factor Detection
View the positive factors of composite numbers to understand how they divide.
Instant Results
Get the result immediately in your browser without submitting data to a server.
Whole Number Support
Check positive and negative whole-number inputs and identify values that cannot be prime.
Factor Count
See how many positive factors the entered number has when factorisation is applicable.
Free Online Tool
Use the calculator online for free without an account, registration or payment.
How to Use Prime Number Calculator
Checking a number for primality takes only a few simple steps.
- Enter a Number — enter the whole number you want to check.
- Check the Number — click the Check Number button to perform the primality test.
- Review the Result — see whether the number is prime or not, along with its factors when applicable.
- Check Another Number — replace the input and run the calculator again whenever required.
How to Check If a Number Is Prime
To determine whether a number is prime, first make sure it is a whole number greater than 1. A number is prime if it has exactly two positive factors: 1 and the number itself. If another whole number divides it evenly, the number is composite rather than prime.
For example, 7 is prime because its only positive factors are 1 and 7. The number 12 is not prime because it can be divided evenly by 2, 3, 4 and 6 as well as 1 and 12.
What Are Prime Numbers?
Prime numbers are positive integers greater than 1 with exactly two positive divisors. The first several prime numbers are 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23 and 29. The number 2 is the only even prime number because every other even number is divisible by 2.
Prime Numbers vs Composite Numbers
A prime number has exactly two positive factors, while a composite number has more than two. For example, 13 is prime because only 1 and 13 divide it evenly, whereas 15 is composite because its positive factors include 1, 3, 5 and 15. The number 1 is neither prime nor composite.
Understanding Prime Number Calculator Results
When you enter a whole number greater than 1, the calculator determines whether it is prime. For a prime number, the positive factors are 1 and the number itself. For a composite number, the calculator displays its positive factors and factor count.
Numbers less than or equal to 1 are not prime. Decimal values are not accepted because prime numbers are defined as positive whole numbers greater than 1. The calculation takes place entirely in your browser, so the number you enter is not sent to a server.
