Probability Calculator
Calculate probability online using simple, complementary, combined and conditional probability formulas.
Probability Calculator
Choose a probability calculation, enter the required values, and select Calculate Probability to see the result.
Simple Probability
Calculate the probability of an event from the number of favourable outcomes and total possible outcomes.
What Is a Probability Calculator?
A probability calculator is an online tool for determining how likely an event is to occur. Probability is normally represented by a value between 0 and 1, where 0 represents an impossible event and 1 represents an event that is certain to occur.
This free Probability Calculator can handle several common probability calculations, including simple probability, complementary probability, combined probability and conditional probability. It is useful for students, teachers, researchers and anyone who needs to check a probability calculation quickly.
Why Use Probability Calculator?
Calculating probability manually is straightforward for simple problems, but a dedicated calculator can make checking formulas and results faster. YesTools provides several common probability methods in one interface.
Simple Probability
Calculate the probability of an event by comparing favourable outcomes with the total number of possible outcomes.
Complementary Probability
Find the probability that an event does not occur by subtracting its probability from 1.
Combined Probability
Calculate the probability of two independent events both occurring by multiplying their probabilities.
Conditional Probability
Calculate the probability of one event occurring when another event is already known to have occurred.
Percentage Results
Results are displayed as both a probability value and a percentage, making them easier to interpret.
Instant Calculations
Calculations are performed directly in your browser without requiring external software or a separate calculator.
How to Use Probability Calculator
Select the type of probability you want to calculate and enter the relevant values. The calculator will validate the values and display the result immediately.
- Choose a calculation type — Select Simple, Complement, Combined or Conditional probability.
- Enter your values — Provide the numbers or probabilities required by the selected calculation.
- Calculate the result — Select Calculate Probability to perform the calculation.
- Review the result — The calculator displays the probability as a decimal and percentage where appropriate.
How to Calculate Probability
For a simple probability calculation involving equally likely outcomes, divide the number of favourable outcomes by the total number of possible outcomes. For example, if an event has 3 favourable outcomes out of 10 possible outcomes, its probability is 3 ÷ 10 = 0.3, or 30%.
Probability calculations can also involve events that occur together, events that do not occur, or situations where the occurrence of one event affects the probability of another. The appropriate formula depends on the relationship between the events.
Simple Probability Formula
The standard simple probability formula is P(A) = favourable outcomes ÷ total possible outcomes. This formula assumes that the possible outcomes are equally likely. A probability can be converted to a percentage by multiplying it by 100.
Conditional and Combined Probability
For two independent events A and B, the probability that both occur is P(A and B) = P(A) × P(B). Conditional probability uses the formula P(A|B) = P(A and B) ÷ P(B), provided P(B) is greater than zero. Conditional probability is useful when information about one event changes the situation in which another event is considered.
Understanding Probability Results
A probability of 0 means an event is impossible within the defined set of outcomes, while a probability of 1 means the event is certain. Values between 0 and 1 represent different degrees of likelihood. For example, 0.25 represents a 25% probability, while 0.75 represents a 75% probability.
When using simple probability, the favourable outcomes must be a valid part of the total possible outcomes. The calculator therefore checks that values are within the appropriate range for the selected calculation. Probability inputs used for combined and conditional calculations must be between 0 and 1.
The calculations on this page are performed locally in your web browser using JavaScript. The tool does not need to send the values to a server to perform the calculation. Results are displayed to a practical level of precision and converted into percentages for easier interpretation.
