What Is a Product Profit Calculator?

A product profit calculator helps you determine how much money remains after the costs associated with selling a product have been deducted from its revenue. It can account for the product's purchase or production cost, shipping, packaging, handling, payment fees and other variable expenses.

The calculator is useful for ecommerce businesses, online retailers, marketplace sellers, manufacturers, resellers and small businesses that need to understand whether a product is profitable at a particular selling price.

Why Use a Product Profit Calculator?

Product profitability depends on more than the difference between the selling price and purchase cost. Including the other costs associated with each sale can provide a more useful estimate of the profit generated by a product.

How to Calculate Product Profit

Product profit is calculated by subtracting the total cost of selling a product from its revenue. Total costs can include the product cost, shipping, packaging, handling, payment processing fees, marketplace fees, advertising costs and other variable expenses associated with the sale.

For example, if a product sells for £50.00 and its total variable costs are £32.00, the resulting profit is £18.00. The profit margin is 36%, because £18.00 represents 36% of the £50.00 selling revenue. The calculator performs these calculations automatically using the figures you enter.

Profit Margin vs Markup

Profit margin and markup describe profitability from different perspectives. Profit margin is calculated by dividing profit by revenue and multiplying by 100. Markup is calculated by dividing profit by total cost and multiplying by 100. A product can therefore have a different markup percentage and profit margin even though both are based on the same profit.

Including Payment and Marketplace Fees

Payment processors and ecommerce marketplaces may charge a percentage of the selling price, a fixed amount per transaction or both. Entering these fees can produce a more realistic estimate of the profit remaining from each sale. If fees vary by order, payment method, location or other conditions, use the fee structure that applies to the sale you are analysing.

Product Profit Calculator Limitations

This calculator provides a mathematical estimate based only on the values entered. It does not automatically retrieve product costs, payment processor fees, marketplace commissions, advertising costs, tax rates or other business expenses.

Actual business profitability can also be affected by returns, refunds, discounts, damaged inventory, unsold stock, taxes, currency conversion, storage, salaries, software subscriptions, advertising and fixed operating expenses. These costs are not automatically included unless they are entered into the calculator as applicable costs.

For accurate financial reporting, use your actual accounting and business records. The calculator is intended to help with product-level profitability estimates and pricing analysis.
